Dr. Gladstone Taylor was born in a small town called LUCEA in Jamaica, the land of Red Stripe beer and reggae music. An early perception is that if you are born in a large country, you are overwhelmed by the vastness and so remain there; while, if you are born in a small island country, the limitation of space is perceived as incarceration, liberation is off the island and you leave as soon as possible. True to form, after “passing through” the rigors of a Roman Catholic school at the elementary level (St. Georges College), he sought the “adventurous” life overseas and went to Canada (McMaster University, B,Sc. Degree in Chemistry, University of British Columbia, M.Sc degree.). During that time he joined the Canadian Navy as a Reserve for four years. Leaving Canada, he spent ten years teaching High School science at a Canadian NATO force establishment in Zweibrucken, Germany. Returning to Jamaica and to the University of the West Indies he became entrenched in academia, earning a Ph.D. degree (Physical Chemistry) and Masters Degrees and Diplomas in Accounting, Government and Management as well as specialized training in Forensic Science, becoming the Director of the Police Forensic Laboratory. He has spent much of the time in Jamaica in various scientific capacities at the University and in the Public Service and is a recipient of national honor of the Order of Distinction. He has acquired both a regional and national reputation, having served on numerous international committees, boards and organizations including the Scientific Advisory Council for the International Geosphere and Biosphere Programme (IGBP), Special Work Team for Biotechnology the ATAS Network (UNCSTD), International Foundation for Science (IFS), Expert Committee on World Intellectual Property- Innovations and Inventions, Member of the World Association of Industrial Technical and Research Organization (WAITRO), the International Technological Institute (ITI) (Caribbean and Latin America), Scientific Advisory Committee(SAC)-Man on the Biosphere Programme (MAB), Jamaica’s National Commission for UNESCO, Small Business and Services and Technical Services Committee, etc. He has two children, a son (Sebastian) and a daughter (Zoya) both of whom reside in Norway. His hobbies are music, philosophy and of course physical fitness about which he now writes with passion. He is to be seen in the very early hours of the mornings jogging around the university campus
