John Eulizer Nimo (Street Articles Author)

“Maayong adlaw sa inyong tanan!” That means “Good day to all of you!” in my native tongue. I am John Eulizer Nimo, and as my greeting suggested, I am from the Philippines specifically from the island of Mindanao – a quaint and peaceful place regardless of the rumors or should I say popular belief of raging wars between Muslims and Christians in our humble island.

Anyway, I was born and raised in an environment filled with many wonderful things. I was born curious, so my inquisitive mind led me to learn various things which were beyond the lessons that were being taught at school. The provincial life is the best thing that ever happened to me, even now as I write this autobiography in a buzzing metropolis; I still yearn for the fresh breeze of the mountains, the smell of freshly cut grass and the nostalgia that sets in when I sense the burning of rice hulls in the rice field.

Curiosity has and always will be an asset for me. Because of that I found many things in life that took my fancy which later turned out to be a passion. At an early age, I began to make simple doodles on plain paper; however these doodles soon became works of art. I arrived at what seemed to be the turning point of my curiosity, talents and skills. High school gave birth to my love of music. I learned to play the guitar and within two years, I was in a way, well versed in the art of music.

I took up Bachelor of Science in Nursing as my college course. College seemed to have opened a new phase or should I say a whole new world in my life. I moved to Metro Cebu to pursue my college education, and with that, many things happened. I realized that there was more to life, there was more things outside the provincial life that I grew used to. However, with the good comes the bad. The buzzing high-paced life that the city offers cannot provide me peace. For the lack of a better word, I shall define city life as in a way “evil”. People in the city have forgotten most of the traditional Filipino culture and values. The things that I held dear in my heart were not present in the city. Still I did not let that affect the values I learned while growing up, I held them even closer, and the negativity even helped strengthen my values as a Christian and a citizen of the Philippines.

However, despite the negativity, I managed to finish my college course, and successfully passed the board exam for nurses here in the Philippines. But the dream of working abroad and earn a hefty salary is all but rubbish. I found out after passing that there was a very large surplus of nurses in the Philippines. Why? Because like me, many were drawn to the very large demand of nurses abroad when starting out as nursing students, by the time we passed the board exam, there was very little work for us, because the demand for nurses abroad declined.

Still, I am left unfettered by the various disappointments my chosen path have provided me. I do believe that the important things in life are the ones that you learn along the way, and it is through learning through these mistakes that one can succeed. I trust that God will reward me of all the efforts I have put into my life. I just re-assure myself with these words “In the end, everything will be okay.”
