I am an ordained minister, writer, artist, chaplain, victim advocate and nonprofit executive, and that description does not even include being a wife, mother and grandmother. Like most people, I wear many hats and my jack-of-all-trades persona means that I am slightly good at a few things, not very good at many things, and quite good at a thing or two.

I do love to write and share snippets from my life's journey, which is a circuitous one.

A Change Gonna' Come
Oh, there been times that I thought I couldn't last for long; But now I think I'm able to carry on; It's been a long, a long time coming; But I know a change gonna’ come, oh yes it will. Recorded by Sam Cooke . . . 1963 . .…

You Can Fly, But That Cocoon Has to Go
An anonymous writer said this, “You can fly, but that cocoon has to go.” Obviously, the quote is referring to caterpillars and butterflies, but more specifically, it’s referring to our lives that can sometimes make us feel like we are stuck in a cocoon. I have found myself in many…

Life's Important Rules
A wise person has said that there are seven cardinal rules in life. The first one is to make peace with your past, so that dealing with your past doesn’t spoil your present life. It’s a good rule, the past cannot be changed. But it can be relegated to its…

Don't Be A Jackass Whisperer
I saw a great quote today by Brene Brown: “Don't try to win over the haters; you are not a jackass whisperer.” I had a “laugh-out-loud” moment over that quote, and thought about my own personal haters. I have many of them for some reason, people who just do not…

How About A Little Retail Therapy
These days of late summer are incredibly hot where I am, almost too hot to go outdoors at all. Staying indoors, or actually feeling trapped by the extremely hot temperature and humidity, can cause an ailment known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Seasonal affective disorder has been widely known as…

Disassembled Relationships
I want to accept the past and live my life so that each moment becomes an opportunity to become closer to the person I am meant to be. It’s not that easy to do in life, especially a life in which one has experienced unpleasant incidents, harsh words, disappointment, and…

Always A Seaon for Dreaming
Are you a dreamer and a visionary? If you are, be on guard, for dreams and visions can bring about unusual actions. Several years ago, my aunt was an actor in a community theatre production of the play "Man of La Mancha." She told me that during the weeks of…

Courage to Embrace Change
Eckhart Tolle has said that although some changes look negative on the surface, perhaps space is being created in a person's life so that something new and exciting can emerge. His words somewhat take the sting out of the process of change. It is not unusual for a person to…

Dancing In the Rain
Beneath the Keeler Memorial Reflecting Telescope at the Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania there is a plaque inscribed with these words written by Sarah Williams: "I have loved the starts too fondly to be fearful of the night.” Fears are a part of life. Worry about the circumstances we are…
