Stacy Thurman (Street Articles Author)

My name is Stacy Thurman. I am in my early thirties and for as long as I can remember I have owned a computer. I grew up with computers and I have always been amazed at their capabilities. I love all of the new social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn to name a few. I probably spend most of the day working on the computer. If I do not have access to my computer I am on my iPhone. I absolutely love anything that can connect me to the World Wide Web!

I have a daughter in elementary school. She is considered a technology native. This means she was born in the age of technology. She has her own iPad where she is able to FaceTime with her cousins. She knows her pictures and coloring sheets can be emailed to Grandma and if she is good Mommy can enter a password that will allow her to download a new game. It’s amazing how quickly kids learn how to use technology.

I also have a thirteen-year old sister who is the main reason why I started this blog. She has a laptop and an iPod. She is always online and updates her Facebook status every ten minutes. I am grateful that she has access to this type of technology but I also worry about how it is being used and what or who she could stumble across.

Part of the problem is that my parents had my sister so late in life. My brothers and sisters and I were in college when my Mother became pregnant. They are older and are not as familiar with the different types of technology. I fear this makes my sister an easy target for online predators. It’s hard for them to keep an eye on what’s she is doing when they don’t understand the technology she is using. I try and keep an eye on her as much as possible but teenagers are really good at hiding what they don’t want you to see. Because of this I felt it would be a good idea to start a website that addressed these concerns. In this day and age I couldn’t possibly be the only one who has them.
