I've enjoyed three wonderful careers, all of which have required writing. I started with a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures. Got a job as a professor of French and Women's Studies at UMass, Boston, publishing one scholarly book and a number of articles of literary criticism. Then I spent 11 years doing organizational development and human resources management at a Fortune 100 company, during which time I did instructional design and wrote lots of pieces detailng programs that I managed, or simply summarizing and reporting for upper management. Currently, I own a dog daycare, grooming, and training shop called The Doggie Den. I write and photograph my own website: www.thedoggieden.net. Our blog is www.doggiecare.blogspot.com. Our brochures, advertising, online descriptions and social networking are all authored by yours truly. And, yes, I have written an unpublished novel!

My articles span the three areas of my professional experience: language and literature; management coaching, organizational development and human resources; and dogs as pets or in business. I excel at academic writing, business writing, journalism, blogging, website copy, and copy editing in my three areas of expertise. I especially enjoy packaging business ideas and business offerings for maximum effectiveness, whether you need a concise paragraph or an article.

I've lived in northern New Jersey; New Mexico; New York City; Connecticut; Boston, San Francisco; and Paris, France. I loved them all, but Paris will always have a special place in my heart. I've traveled throughout the United States and Europe.

Currently, I live and work in central MA. with my two dogs and one cat.

Abusers Are Experts at Blaming the Victim
People who work with victims of abuse often encounter feelings of guilt in the very people who should least feel it. Some victims have withstood abuse for so long that they cannot envision any explanation for it other than their own shortcomings. Whatever the victim’s history, however, it’s important to…

When There's A Sex Offender Next Door
Years ago I befriended my neighbors who had a son in his thirties living at home. Because of a bad economy, it was a common occurrence at the time for older children to return to their parents' homes, so I thought nothing of my neighbors' situation. With time, however, the…

What to Do About the Bully Breeds?
One of the dilemmas of owning a dog daycare business is whether or not to accept dogs commonly categorized as bully breeds. These are breeds who are prone to dominant, sometimes aggressive behavior because of the jobs they've been bred to fill. The best known are the Pit Bull (American…

Haircut for An Old Girl
Like everything else, getting a haircut changes as you get older. Now in my mid sixties, I have only wistful memories of the time when going to the beauty salon meant a stylish, sexy transformation. Once upon a time I lived on Beacon Hill in Boston where I patronized the…

Are Flea And Tick Preventives Safe?
In the spring of 2009, the EPA announced that it would increase its scrutiny of spot-on flea and tick medications for all pets. The closer look included all of the popular brands including Advantix, Frontline Plus, and Bio-Spot. They took this step because the number of complaints about pets becoming…

When Good Employees Go Bad - Part 2
After repeated 4am awakenings, I find I need to write about something that has me frustrated and frazzled. Recently an employee in my small business has taken a turn for the worst. She's always had performance issues but until now the strengths outweighed the weaknesses. Then a few months ago,…

So You Want to Start A Dog Daycare Business?
Fifteen years ago I was a Human Resources Manager in a Fortune 100 company that had recently been acquired by another Fortune 100 company. The shrinking inventory of high tech hardware and service companies showed signs of more contraction; and I was tired of managing layoffs for my employer. I…
