Change is something we humans have happen to us every day. You might have to change your route to work because of construction so you have to take a detour. That would be considered a small change. A big change could alter your life forever such as having a child.
Comfort Zone
Many people resist change because they fear that it could be bad for them. Change is what stops people from achieving their goals. Sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone to achieve your goals and that can be scary. They’re scared that they’ll fail and they’ll never be able to recover from it.
Moving the cheese
Sometimes things don’t go as planned for you in life and you might have to change what you do in order to proceed with life. There is a book written about change that really opened my eyes about how important change is to be successful in life. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, M.D. is a book about two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two little people the same size as mice named Hem and Haw. The “Cheese” metaphorically describes what people want in life such as health, money, a relationship, or a job. “The Maze” is the place where you look for what you want. An unexpected change happens to the mice and the little people and they have to adapt to it. The mice adapted very quickly whereas the little people did not want to accept the change and resisted it.
Expecting the unexpected
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “expect the unexpected.” I honestly think that is a true statement. In life you need to know that sometimes things don’t always go as planned and you have to figure out how to adapt to the situation you’re faced with. When you know that unexpected events can occur it’s easier to know how to change to get through the problem.
Change can be difficult but it can also be good. I think an excellent example I’d like to use is a recovering drug addict. A recovering drug addict has it really hard because they have to fight their craving for the drug and sometimes their body will go into really rough withdrawals from having been denied the drug for a period of time. But if that person wants to live and not die from their addiction they have to fight their craving for the drug. Some fail and fall back into their old habits of abusing drugs and it doesn’t end well for them while others have the strength and courage to fight their cravings in order to become clean to live a better life.
Changing is finding the new cheese
Going back to the book Who Moved My Cheese?. In life things change, and if you want to survive and thrive, you have to do things differently then you use to. 60 years ago it was really about hard work, long hours, and building a physical business. Now in the information age, we can do a whole business online. It will still take hard work yes, but a different kind of hard work.
