5 Considerations Before Becoming Social Media Engaged In Business

We are seeing big changes in shopping habits. On line sales in the UK broke the 50Bn Sterling barrier last year. So how does this change manifest itself in this on line world – isn’t it just the same approaches before on line but in an on line environment?

Well not really because there is a huge difference – you as a sales person are not face to face with your client now are you – obvious isn’t it?

Prior to the internet (can we remember this) we would advertise our business and people would come to a shop or call us to make contact and learn about our goods and services.

Now they can do this on line if we have a web site, but there is a major difference – they can compare what we are offering with all other offerings of the same type anywhere in the world.

So what is all this about Social Media Engagement and what do we mean by this?

And taking this theme further don’t we just use the social media as we would have done when we advertised in the pre-internet days?

Let’s be very clear that promoting your business on the web and using social media can extend your reach and it is inexpensive which can only be a good thing in these austerity driven days.

There are at least five considerations you should define before you take the plunge into social media engagement for your business:

1. How well do you know social media? Do you yourself use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and if so do you see the advantages for yourself? If you cannot justify using this yourself then how will you use it for your business? Moreover if you don’t use Facebook how will you know how to use it for the business?

2. Do you have a purpose for using social media with your business? Using social media costs time and a lot of effort above everything else and if you have not defined a purpose for it with your company how will you know how effective your engagement is?

3. Do you appreciate that Social Media engagement is social as it says and this means that it is not a direct sales tool, but an indirect one.

4. Do you understand that if you want to become social media engaged it will take a lot of your time and this maybe time which could be better spent on more productive work in your business. It simply isn’t a given that plunging into Social Media will give you a defined reward level.

5. Do you see that social media engagement is just part of the on line marketing tool kit that you need to use to market your companies products on line?

If you haven’t appreciated these five points then maybe you need to stop and do some social media learning in order to improve the chances that your social media engagement is successful. More and more people are doing this and looking for a good learning experience in order to really understand what social media engagement is from a business perspective.

The internet is full of articles that point out the gaffes and blunders made by companies who have not appreciated these points and you don’t want to be another one of those do you?

Street Talk

Good article. Like the comment about social media not being a direct sales tool but an indirect one. It's interesting that I get more likes and comments when it's be talking and not me selling. Folks get tired of all the sales pitches.

Good Article. I'm still learning the ins and outs of social media. It is very time consuming and for me, I have a hard time with Twitter, but finally getting the hang of Google+. I feel like I'm spending too much time where I should be writing articles.

I agree it can take up a lot of your time with no guaranteed success. It's hard work.
