Distractions Kill Achievement

What’s stopping you from achieving more? For some it’s fear, for others it’s self-sabotage and even those that rise above these can get knocked by distractions.

So Subtle…

Have you ever noticed how subtle distractions can be? I believe all people are basically good. There are few people that will see a child in need and walk the other way. I believe every person has at least one other person that they care about.

I say this for a reason. We also have things that we are want to accomplish as business owners, entrepreneurs and people that know we can achieve greater. I’m probably going to get in trouble for this one, but I believe that the things and people we care about can be the most subtle distractions.

No, don’t relegate yourself to the Batcave you have in your house. I’m not saying to dismiss the things or people closest to you. I’m just saying watch out for the distractions that come from their direction. They are not in the same place you are operating in. It’s hard for them to understand where we are if they can’t meet us halfway.

This is a very sensitive subject, so I feel like I’m walking on eggshells, but the subtlety of distractions can really kill. The people closest to you are normally the ones that can do the most damage. This is true for distractions as well. Family businesses close all the time because of the old strategy of divide and conquer. Instead of taking out the problem, it kills a dream.

There are differing opinions in business operations or money or something that can distract from the real issue. Ok! I’m off the family thing :-) Other distractions include money, pride, lack of business growth, a new path, new information, analyzing…...analyzing...analyzing and much more.

So Enticing…

Distractions are so enticing sometimes because they remind us of what we would rather be doing. If it’s a beautiful day, then we can be distracted to want to go outside. If we are working on a project, then we can get distracted by making sure it is perfect before we finish it.

When we are on the phone with someone important, but then we are being called by another person, we struggle to decide who to talk to. There are so many different ways to be distracted throughout your day. I have heard a pretty good name for them...Bright Shiny Objects.

Some people say that S.O.S stands for “Shiny Object Syndrome” and that it can take away your focus. I think that’s a perfect name. It takes your focus off what you are doing and if it is shiny enough, you might not get that focus back.

Have you ever been driving down the road and you smell something really good? You look around for that smell and you see the restaurant that it’s coming from. Your mouth begins to water and you have two choices, ignore the sensation or make a pit stop. They do that on purpose, you know... It’s ENTICING!

They are marketing to your senses and stomach. They are marketing to your emotions and if you haven’t eaten in awhile (like 5 minutes...joking) then you might be making that pit stop. Distractions do the same thing to us also. They target our emotions. Emotions are definitely one of the most volatile and ever changing elements of people. The distractions that draw you are different than the ones that draw me, because we are different.

So Dangerous…

Therein lies the danger of distractions. They can take you off course in life, family and business. They can kill our dreams slowly because many times we are unaware of their attacks on us. Remember, they are subtle and enticing. These make them absolutely dangerous.

There is good news though (Phew!). There is a secret way for you to kill your distractions before they kill your dreams. Be ever present through your day. Stay focused on what you are trying to accomplish knowing that the distractions will come. This will peak your awareness as you pursue your daily goals.

You want to be aware because then you can recognize the moments you are weakest. You can prepare yourself and your emotions have a better chance of staying balanced. The big billboard distractions are not always hard to be aware of seeing. We can even say “no” to those because we see what’s happening.

The danger comes from those things that could go either way, the things that play with emotions and focus. When we can recognize them, we can then dispose of them.

For My Readers…

I have a challenge for you. If you feel comfortable and willing, share a distraction that you are fighting against or that you have beaten. I would love to hear, see and help encourage anyone that needs it!

I will start...A distraction I dealt with was impatience. As a business owner I see so many opportunities in front of me that I choose one and if it doesn’t work immediately I wonder if it will ever work. I’m glad I could overcome that because I wouldn’t be in it for the long run otherwise. It takes time to gain momentum. Just being honest :-)
