How to Improve Your Productivity And Work More Efficiently

Everyone wishes they were more productive and efficient. They want to get more done in a shorter period of time so they can make more money, have more free time to spend with their friends and family and to just enjoy more of life in general. One of the biggest obstacles to improving your productivity is procrastination. I'm going to tell you a couple of tools that can help you overcome procrastination and become a producer.

The first step in improving your productivity and overcoming procrastination is to know why you procrastinate. The most common reasons are because we feel overwhelmed, have a fear of failing, a fear of succeeding, and a feeling that we are missing out on the fun things in life while we're working. In response to the tension that these things cause we procrastinate to relieve the tension temporarily. The problem with this is that is wastes an enormous amount of time and is a self-defeating coping mechanism.

When we procrastinate we end up feeling guilty about it and have a lot of negative self-talk, which just makes us more anxious and procrastinate more. By changing our negative self-talk to positive self-talk (and no, this is not new agey stuff) we can start to become more productive. Some of the things procrastinators say to themselves are: "I have to do this," "I must finish," "This project is big & important," "I must be perfect," and "I don't have time to play."

Those thoughts are more detrimental to your productivity than you think. They put you in the "victim" role, or they put a lot of pressure on you and cause you to fear failure, thus causing you to procrastinate. On the other hand, a producer would say things like: "I choose to do this," "When can I start," "I can take one small step" "I can be perfectly human" and "I must take time to play." All of these things take you out of the "victim" role and give you a feeling of power. By "choosing" to do something, even if it is an unpleasant chore or the income tax forms, it is your decision, and when you commit to something you always want to do it your best.

By becoming aware of what causes you to procrastinate, you can consciously correct your behavior and replace it with new, producer tools. Positive self-talk is one of the best ways of overcoming your procrastination habits and to improve your productivity and work more efficiently.
