Is Ballroom Dancing Stuffy?

Ballroom Dancing only for Older Folks?

When I was a wee lad Ballroom Dancing was definitely stuffy and out of my reach. It belonged to some part of society which I was definitely not going to enter and I didn't even get into a ballroom. What a difference a generation makes - or does it? Is Ballroom Dancing still seen as some pastime for the older folks? I would like to suggest that it is not stuffy, probably never has been and this myth has been generated by people who really didn't want to know more.

Reality Ballroom Dancing.

You will all know what I mean by this won't you - Strictly Come Dancing? This certainly has helped tremendously to revolutionise the thinking about this sport or pastime whichever way you want to look at it. The program has been copied across the World and draws above average audience figures. This is not surprising really is it? We all like to see a show, and that's what this is, which is glamorous, challenging, full of beautiful people, and controversial in the fact we don't always agree with the judges markings do we? This series started in 2004

Prior to this?

Go back to the 1984 Olympic Winning routine by Torville and Dean which has to be the absolutely quintessential ice dance. This I would suggest started a trend of putting forms of dancing into the front line of our viewing. Following on from this came shows around the UK and then globally. Yes it's ice dancing but if you look at what this has now become with Dancing on Ice you can see the connection can't you?

Has this translated to younger people dancing ballroom?

In a way this has definitely been a huge catalyst which has made this form of dancing much more popular with the younger generation so yes is the answer. Let's just mention though that competition ballroom dancing has been around for all my lifetime. What has happened is that the dance form has broken out of the strictures of competition and become something that anyone can go and do. Of course this has become a revenue stream for the ballrooms as well, and they were struggling in the late 80's and 90's and this will have helped. What is interesting to note also is that many of the modern pop tunes can be danced to in Ballroom. Let's face it in ballroom you have the jive, the samba, the cha, the rumba, and with the exception of the rumba these are all fast dances which can be performed to modern pop. Now we see DJ's recognising this trend and including these dance types in their programs. So I would say that ballroom dancing is no longer seen as stuffy, and providing the environment where it is presented appeals to the younger folks they will participate. Ballroom dancing has become modern - yes?
