What Are the Root Causes Of Acne?

There are 3 main conditions that when combined are the root causes of acne. These 3 conditions are:

  1. An overproduction of sebum oil (waxy oil that is secreted to keep hair and skin supple) within a hair follicle.
  2. The mixing of free-floating dead skin cells together with the sebum oil that forms a plug in the follicle at the surface of the skin.
  3. The growth in the size of p. acnes colony within the plugged follicle.

Acne is a term used to refer to skin blemishes caused by common acne, and cystic acne. Acne is caused by an infection that occurs when a hair follicle become plugged with a mixture of sebum oil (naturally secreted from the sebaceous gland within the follicle), and free floating dead skin cells (which have been naturally shedded from the walls of the follicle). The infection is caused by the bacterium, p. acnes, which feeds on sebum oil and is common on the surface of human skin and within the hair follicles.

When a follicle becomes plugged, bacteria and their waste become trapped along with sebum oil, and the shedded skin cells. As production of sebum continues, the bacterial colony grows in size, along with the numbers of dead skin cells. As the volume grows, the plugged follicle begins to bulge. It becomes infected and inflamed, and usually produces what’s known as a whitehead. The whitehead contains a fluid of puss, the remains of dead bacteria and white blood cells, as the body tries to fight the infection. This whitehead may also darken to become a blackhead.

If the affected follicle remains plugged, pressure and wastes buildup and the infection become worse and turns red in color. The buildup of these contaminants can exert pressure to deeper layers of the skin, producing lumps called cysts. These infections can burst out of the follicle wall, and cyst containment sac, and spread to adjacent areas, deep under the surface of the skin.

It’s never recommended that you squeeze the pimple so as to, “pop the zit”. This could cause the rupture of the follicle or cyst, which is very painful and always has an adverse effect on the healing process, as it tends to spread the infection.

The root causes of acne in adolescents are generally because of the fluctuating hormones they experience during puberty. The surge of different hormones causes excessive sebum production, and an increase of skin regeneration, which means more skin cells are shedded. These factors lead to more plugged follicles, much more frequently.

The reasons adults get acne may also include a fluctuation in hormones, but these hormone swings in men and women can be the result from stress or other factors. In women, the dramatic hormone swings that naturally occur during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can also result in acne flare-ups. Some women have reported developing acne after discontinuing birth control pills, where the pills may have been keeping their acne at bay. Most acne sufferers find that over counter acne treatments are effective for their acne.
