Treating back acne can be particularly difficult compared to facial acne as your back has so many more sebum glands that are responsible for the oil that your body produces. When these glands over produce oil, the dead skin on the surface mix with the oil and once dry, create blockages that lead to pimples.
Your back is also a lot harder to reach with your hands compared to trying to cleanse your face. But the thing that really makes it hard to get rid of back acne, is the fact that the back can so easily be irritated. Think about it, your shirt rubs up and causes friction to any pimples that you already have on your back, if you wear a backpack this is also causing irritation to the acne, and when you go to sleep the pimples are becoming inflamed as friction is caused. And these are just some of the things that can cause irritation.
So, what are some ways of treating back acne?
A couple ways that you can prevent irritation, is to wear clothing that fits more comfortably, cotton is great. Consider investing in a shoulder bag rather than a backpack if you have to wear one. When going to sleep, wear a cotton shirt to help prevent your back from coming in contact with the sheets on your bed that are bound to have large amounts of bacteria on them. Also, keep the amount of showers that you take to a maximum of 3. When you take a shower, the water hitting your body causing the skin to tighten and dry up eventually cracking and becoming flaky.
Clean your back with either Salicylic Acid or Witch Hazel. Both of these have the ability to help clean away the dry skin on the surface of your body and helps get rid of excess oil that you may have on your body. This is great for stopping future breakouts of pimples that might occur on your back. I believe that Salicylic Acid works better out of the two, but if your hard pressed for cash, witch hazel is your best choice.
When your in the shower, either use the Salicylic Acid or Witch Hazel that you have. You can apply it on to your back using your hand or a shower scrubber (but be gentle). Once the cleanser is on your back, let it sit for a couple minutes, 2 minutes is good, then rinse off with cold water.
The benefits of cold water. Its funny how such a simple thing can be so good at treating back acne. Cold water for your acne is able to reduce the size of the pimple by lessening the red swelling around the pimple, shrinking the size of your pores, and helping healthy, firm skin cells develop.
What I do when I take a shower, is after I've finished cleaning my back, I rinse off with pure cold water and let the water run on my back for thirty seconds. If you have a hard time doing this in the shower, try getting a towel wet with cold water, and gently running the towel over your back.
While treating back acne can be difficult, knowing where to start is the key. The mentioned methods are a great starting point in helping with the acne on your back, and have proved to work very well for others. I hope they do the same for you. Goodluck!
