3 Myths And Misconceptions About Acupuncture And Tai Chi

Acupuncture has come a long way, from being considered quackery in medical books over twenty years ago to becoming an integrated part of our medical system. However, as with all growing things in this world sometimes there are a few misconceptions that deserve some attention. Understand and acknowledging these concerns can help us to grow as individuals and have deeper insight into the resources available to us.

So I decided to write this in order to provide some guidance into some of the grey areas where people have questions. These are some of the more common questions and misconceptions I’ve been asked and hopefully this will shed some light on some of those lingering concerns.

Are you sure you don’t put anything on the needles?

I get this question often because people are so intrigued on how acupuncture works. The majority of needles used are stainless steel, and a small minority may use silver or gold. Acupuncture needles are classified by the FDA as a type II medical device and can only be purchased by licensed acupuncturist. Acupuncturists are also required by law to use one-time disposable needles.

Don’t the acupuncture needles hurt?

One of the biggest fears of acupuncture is the fear of acupuncture needles, which are generally some of the least pain causing needles you can use. When most people think of needles, they’re really thinking of the hypodermic needles which are used to inject or withdraw fluids from the body. I still cringe when receiving a shot or withdrawing blood and usually ask for a lollipop afterwards.

The person administering the needles does make a difference, so it helps to find an acupuncturist that understands your concerns and how you’re body operates.. The most discomfort you may experience with a good acupuncturist will make you say “hmm…interesting”. If you’ve have had an unpleasant experience with acupuncture my suggestion would be to find another practitioner who may understand more about your body type.

Tai chi chuan and qi gong are exercise for old people.

You may have seen an elderly group of people at the park doing tai chi and I can understand that it has gained a reputation as an exercise for seniors. It has amazing health benefits and I encourage every single aging adult to participate in some type of daily tai chi and qi gong exercise. However, it is not just limited to a certain group or groups of people.

High school students can benefit from the increased focus and mental clarity gained from regular practice. Prisoners and Inmates can benefit from these exercises because it can help reduce stress, anger, and induce feelings of higher consciousness and reasoning. Employees can benefit from a tai chi and qi gong program because it can help employees generate new ideas, provide energy to power through the work day, and allow employees to give their best without exhausting themselves. As you can see all types of people can benefit from tai chi practice, it just requires a first step be taken in order to experience all the benefits.

Hopefully this has helped you to gain a more insightful mindset into this great holistic healing modality. Research is continuously being conducted on acupuncture and I typically advise all my patients to learn more about acupuncture through studying acupuncture theory and understanding health through a bio-medical perspective as well. Only through this process do we begin to understand the path to great health and wellness.

Thank you for the information on acupuncture. I don't know if I could bring myself to trying it given my needle phobia. But, I'm fascinated by it and look forward to more article from you on it.

My husband just recently started doing acupuncture for stress and insomnia. Its his first week and he loves it so much. I encouraged him to although I've never done it myself. I've heard so many good things about it and I look forward to hearing more. I am one of those people that have a needle phobia so I appreciated your comments on that!

Hi Ally I'm glad you found the article useful and that was my goal! I understand about needle phobia and had it myself, and I think one suggestion I have is to know that the needles are here to help you, not to hurt you. I'm really glad your husband found relief with acupuncture and I wish you both the best in health, family, and life!
