Acupuncture Meridians And Their Functions

What are meridians? I hear this question often and I enjoy answering it with delight! Meridians are energy pathways which helps connect all of the energies of the body. There are a few functions of meridians and it helps to know them to have a better understanding of what they are. This is also from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, based on a theory in which we call “Zang Fu”.

Meridians connect the organs to the exterior portion of the body. In Chinese medicine, organs send their qi (“chee”) or energy via these channels. Certain points along the meridians can have very powerful effects, which these are called acupuncture points.

Ever see or hear about how an acupuncturist needled someone's toe for a headache? The reason why that is because of meridians, which help to connect energy pathways that start at one end of the body and end at another. Meridians connect to the internal organs and also help connect the different tissues on the outside of the body.

The meridians help to deliver qi and blood to different parts of the body. Qi and blood are considered vital substances in Chinese Medicine and when there is lacking of these the body is more prone to disease.

You can view meridians similar to tree branches, with bigger branches stemming out creating smaller branches that spread throughout the surface our bodies. Problems can occur if something happens to the the flow of energy. Qi can stagnate, which can lead to pain, digestive issue, and emotional disharmony. So an acupuncturist in this case would stimulate points on the channel, or meridian (or perhaps another meridian which has some relation) to help move the qi and unblock the stasis.

Your immune system is associated with your outer meridians and are considered to be your first line of defense against exterior pathogens. It can weaken and leave you vulnerable for catching a cold.

When your body is weaken internally, then your protection for the outside will be weak as well. This is why proper nutrition is highly encouraged in Chinese Medicine because strengthening the internal organs and processes will strengthen your meridians and immunity.

This is a short introduction into the channels that are responsible for connecting the many parts of your energetic self. Great article, I've heard so much about meridians and you seem to be an excellent authority on the subject. Is it true that mobile phones and other electromagnetic radiating devices(microwaves and the like) affect the balance of these meridians leading to ill health?
