It\'s All About the Yin And Yang

Yin and yang are basic concepts in Chinese philosophy, medicine, and martial arts. Most people can identify the recognizable symbol, a circle with a curvy line down the middle and two dots, one black and one white. It is a symbol of balance, equality, and tranquility. I wanted to touch on a few concepts which really give yin and yang a more in depth understanding on top of knowing the meaning of duality.

One can't exist without the other

This concept of yin and yang is very interesting. Men can't exist without women, heat cannot exist without coolness, and the light cannot exist without the dark. The idea that nothing is totally yin or totally yang means that there is two sides to everything. On top of that, trying to achieve a result that is completely yin or completely yang will go against the laws of nature and force the natural energies to shift back into a state of equilibrium.

It's all about relativity

In Tradition Chinese Medicine or TCM for short, yang is considered to be more energetic, fast, and exterior, while yin is more slow, cold, and interior. A Ferrari may be considered more “yang” compared to a bicycle which would be considered “yin”. However, when compared to a Jet, a Ferrari becomes more yin and the jet becomes more yang. It's all how you look at it at any given moment. It may take a while to sink in, but play around with it and you'll begin to absorb the concept.

Give me some of your yang, yin?

On top of opposing one another, and needing each other for all of eternity, there is a mutual sharing relationship between yin and yang. Sometimes yin is needed order to create yang, and vice versa.

Yin, yang, and science

Yin and yang can be applied to modern day science. Electrical polarity, the binary code system, and human respiration are just some examples illustrating the basis of yin and yang. It's amazing what can be created when combing different systems of thought.

What intrigues me most about Traditional Chinese Medicine are the theories that are deduced and applied to everyday life. It is through observation that many of these theories where created, and as an acupuncturist these are the basic principles I use to combat disease, live a more holistic centered lifestyle, and evolve as a human being. Understand yin and yang is the first step to understanding acupuncture theory, and in general, how energy works.

Carlo, this has been very timely for me. One of those "I needed that" articles. Your explanation was logical and easy for me to follow and really gave me something to think about. I hadn't given the whole YinYang bit any thought until it came up in a kineseology treatment I had this week as being significant to me. She was talking about balancing my physical and spiritual and the curvy line in the middle being my life path. Maybe an analogy but gets me pondering! Thanks again.
