My Truth About Drinking

This article has simmered in my mind because, in truth, I don’t actually want to write it. It’s a similar feeling to the first few I wrote that explored the unconscious mind and like topics. They were my ‘truth’ and yet I was anxious about sharing something I didn’t fully understand myself.

So now I’m being bothered by something that is both beyond my understanding and not my personal truth. I haven’t ‘tested’ this knowledge. I don’t understand the elusiveness of this information.

I have learnt to listen and certainly not discredit.

Recently a fellow street article writer posed the question “What would you have said?” It was in response to an experience when a young man told her that he was going to drink in his 18th birthday. Responsibly. He was going to a friends’ house and wouldn’t be driving.

The ‘for’ and ‘against’ of our young people drinking to have a ‘good time’ is a topic fraught with personal opinion and beliefs. The best way to do it ‘safely’ is another topic again. I hardly need to add my two cents worth to remind us all of what we already know.

What I didn’t know came via a gentle snowy haired man who has dedicated his life to spirituality, healing and helping others. This is his truth and I share it only because, after much contemplation, I have realized I would call him a mentor to myself personally. I respect his truth.

When this man was a young boy he was at a drinking establishment with his father who had gone there on business. Just a child, not older than my own, he stood off to the side and watched the patrons going about their business. One man entered and, with purpose, made his way to the bar asking for the largest of beers with the demand to “Keep them coming…”

At about this time the child watching realized that the bar was filled not only with people but also with shadowy spirits moving amongst the patrons. ‘People’ who weren’t there to anyone excepting the boy. One in particular hovered attentively near the drinking man.

After about his third or fourth drink this ‘spirit’ entered the man. Stepped in and found a temporary ‘home’ while, I assume, the alcohol had addled the man’s conscious faculties. The man immediately became loud and obnoxious.

“And this,” finished my ‘storyteller’, “is why some men become angry and violent under the influence of alcohol and some women act morally inappropriate against anything they would do when they are sober”.

It’s quite a thought.

So what would I say, in an ideal world?

If you are a young person, remember your magnificence. The best times in life are the ones in which you laugh and dance because there is joy in your heart, not in your blood stream.

Choose to be a designated driver and encourage your friends to bring their own car. Be brave enough to love your soul more than your companions.

If you must drink take responsibility for your own safety. Remember that this could mean more than where you’re drinking. It has a lot to do with whom you’re drinking with. Do you truly know who that is?

Put on your make-up and your trendy shoes and most of all, put on protection from the source of pure and loving universal energy. We all have access to it and it’s only a matter of calling forth, or visualizing, a waterfall of colorful energetic protection over your body. If negative energy wants to approach you, feel confident that you’re in the place to back hand it out of your personal space.

These last bits are my truths. That’s what I’d say.

Wow, what a topic I knew we here at SA would be touching on sooner or later. I could go on and on about your story, because that little one was me at one time. I grew up in the bars, and I lived the lifestyle for many many years. I too am sober and will stay that way. I could not say anything that would help this young man except to stay safe, as he has to experience life on his own. great article, I still have goose bumps.

Amazing story, Heather. I do believe in spirits and I am not surprised that this occurred, although it is admittedly the first I've heard of it. I could tell stories of witnessing spirits enter bodies ... perhaps another day. However, it does explain why so many evil things occur when alcohol is involved. I partake of the half glass of wine a few nights a week and enjoy it, but never to the extreme where the evil spirits could take over! Again, a wonderfully thought provoking article, Heather! Truly amazing.

Thanks AJ. Would love to hear what you have to say. There is so much to learn from others. The trick is knowing what fits with our own belief system and what doesn't. In lieu of that I'm taking an open minded stance on many things I used to have a definite opinion on. Too often I have grown to realise there is more to situations than I understood previously. This is true in every area of life. Glad this article has provoked thought. The story did that for me and I simply wanted to share the "what if".

What a first class article, Heather. I'll be touching on alcoholism soon, because I am an alcoholic. I started drinking when I was 18, and didn't stop until I was 36. I've been 'dry' ever since. Not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic, of course. The problem is it's like playing Russian Roulette. You may start drinking and be perfectly all right. On the other hand, like me, I was so low that I was having delirium tremens. My best advice is not to start. And there's no cure, despite what this advertisement on television tells you. The alcoholism is always waiting in the wings, ready to pounce if you do something stupid. But very well done. Excellent article. Every good wish, Mike

Magnificent article, Heather! Well said. So much bad stuff happens around alcohol. Yet there is this society expectation that pressures to drink, to drink to excess, once you become "of age" now. As if that's the point of being and that point were "finally" achieve.

True Cynthia. I wish young people knew that their peers at this age are transient and in a few short years may have no place in their lives. Young people are trying many new things at this age and unfortunately are doing it all with inexperience and vigour! I fear it will remain this way by the very nature of things. We protect our children so closely in this age (no roaming all day for miles anymore) that I worry there will come a time they 'break free' for the experience of independence!

This is one of your best articles Heather and I am really happy to realize that more and more people are trying to talk about the drinking problem. It seems that drinking has vanished generations and it is time to turn all that picture that drinking is cool! I really hope that all parents take your advice in seriously and change their attitude. Congratulations, thanks for sharing!

Hi Maria, thank you for your high praise. Unfortunately it's something that is 'socially acceptable' and in some circles expected. I've been surprised at the outpouring here and am glad for the awareness generated.
