Smoking is the cause of the most deaths in the USA than any other disease. Millions of people, young as well as old are affected by this dangerous scourge. But, what is smoking? It can be defined as the habit of burning, inhaling, and exhaling the smoke of tobacco or cannabis either by the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes or even chewing the tobacco or cannabis is considered the intake of those substances.

Many people start this practice at a very young age and excuse themselves by stating that they find relaxation in this habit, others say that it eases stress, while another group says it helps them to be slim. None of these reasons contains any truth and when one considers the serious consequences that result from such a poor habit they would consider to quit smoking now. To consider that smoking does not only affect the first hand smoker, or the person who is smoking, but it is more disastrous to the innocent bystander, is something for the smoker to seriously consider. Secondary smoking or second hand smoking causes breathing problems for children. It causes asthma and the high 10% mortality rate among children, and added to this, research has found that a child who has been exposed to smoking would most likely become a smoker.

When one considers that their bodies are to be the temple of God's Holy Spirit, and they are required not to put into their bodies anything that is harmful, one should be more mindful and abstain from these dangerous substances. The clarion call is to quit smoking now. The secondary smoke alone which contains twice as much nicotine which is referred to as class A carcinogen- a substance which causes cancer, should awaken within a smoker his connscience of not hurting innocent people

Nicotine, the addictive and powerful substance in tobacco, is more addictive than cocaine and heroin. It affects the physical structure of the brain by causing dopamine in the brain to be released making the smoker feel that they are having enjoyment. Nicotine makes one feel like they are starving, and there is not enough nicotine, so the smoker has to satisfy this craving, by lightiing up at least a pack daily. There is no warning on the pack to alert the smoker of the danger of nicotine. This alone should drive the smoker to quit smoking now.

Some people form the habit of smoking because of the people that they associate with, the places that they frequent, and the social activities in which they are involved. In order to break this habit head on, one has to separate themselves from cigarette, cigar and pipe and the nicotine addiction. One has to think about the benefits he can gain, if they can only quit smoking now. There would be better health, longer life, an increase in finances, friends will be more supportive, and would be a better example for others.

Smokers suffer from bronchitis, influenza, pneumonia, heart attack and stroke, serious chronic lung infection, and cancer of various the parts of the body, including mouth, the throat, the larynx, digestive tract, bladder, pancreas, kidneys, liver, stomach, and the cervix. The smoker also suffers from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Almost all the organs in the body is affected by smoking. A smoking pregnant mother risks birth defect of her baby and the baby's weight would also be affected. What is most frightening ,is the peripheral vascular disease known as Buerger's disease which results in the loss by amputation of fingers, toes arms and legs because of smoking. To live a more healthy life, a smoker must quit smoking now.

There is still hope for the smoker. It takes will power to kick this habit and there is free counselling available, as well as, suitable medication.
