Stopping Porn Use In Its Tracks

It has been debated whether or not pornography can be categorized as an addiction. In my experience, I could tell you that it is. There are many people in this world, including myself, who's life has been negatively influenced by porn. There are many who desire to be clean of porn use in their life, but realize that going cold turkey or white-knuckling it has not worked. Will power is simply not enough in most cases. There is help available to stopping porn use in your life. The following are some important steps to take in your quest to stopping porn in it's tracks.

Install Filtering/Accountability Software

The majority of people get there fill of pornography from the internet. It's easily accessible, often free and it keeps us anonymous. The fact that internet porn is so easily accessible makes this addiction so hard to give up. It is certainly not impossible, however. A very important step to stopping porn use is to set up a internet filter on your computer. Filters will block out pornographic sites and other sites that can be a detriment to your recovery. Accountability software is another great tool. This type of software will log what websites you have visited and will send a report to whomever you assign to receive them (wife, best friend, minister, father). Pornography addiction thrives in secrecy, and accountability software really helps shed a light on it.

Tell Someone That You Are Struggling

As stated above, pornography thrives in secrecy and telling someone you trust about your struggles is a great way for getting it out in the open. This may seem like a non-option for some, and there are online forums available for you to discuss your struggles with others who share the addiction. This will keep you anonymous but allows you to reveal your struggles to an understanding group of people. While the forum is a great tool, it is usually very helpful for you to tell someone you know and trust.

Find a New Outlet

Pornography is most often used as a coping mechanism from stress, loneliness, boredom, physical pain or tirelessness. I can tell you I have used porn to cope in each one of these cases. So, now we are seeking a porn-free life, it is important we find a new hobby or even passion when one of these common issues arise. This can be anything, as long as it does not lead to another self-destructive habit. For me, I lift weights, run, play guitar, play tennis, talk to a loved one, play online video games, write articles, start a journal, listen to music, watch a movie, go to the library and others. For whatever I'm feeling, I can find something that can ease the urge to use pornography.

Seek Out Recovery Programs

There are several programs out there to assist you in stopping porn use in your life. I won't say any particular one is the best. It really depends on the person. Some need face-to-face time and can look up SA (Sex Addicts Anonymous) meetings in their area to attend. Some can find there program within an online forum. Although these forums do not have set steps to take, other forum member often have great insight for a regimented program for recovery. There are also recovery programs online you can find. Some of these do come with a price, but if it leads to a better, porn-free life, than any amount should be taken into consideration. For some, you may even consider an off-line program. These can come at a high-cost, but often have a high success rate.

There has never been as much porn use in our history as there is today and there will be more tomorrow than there is today. It comes down to a personal level for you in stopping porn in your own life. As I have listed some steps you can take to cease porn from your life, there is much more information out there. Do some digging and you will find some great resources. Besides, researching how to stop porn in your life will actually keep you from searching for porn.
