A Russian Adoption Experience

Life is an adventure and we have been blessed with two special children adopted from Russia. It is hard to say what, why or who decides your destiny, but in 2001, our lives changed forever. Not just because of 9/11, but just before this horrific event, two children came into our lives.

There have been ups and downs. They have needed a lot of extra care and attention. These children are not normal children, like you and me. They have been uprooted from who knows where and from a mother that who knows what she drank and ate while they were invitro.

Yes, these children were uprooted and placed in what the Russians call a "baby home". It is a stark vision of reality. The furnishings still left from the Communist regime. Clothes hand washed and tattered from over use, hanging outside at the front of the baby home, left to dry. A milk truck pulls up with a fresh load of unpasteurized milk, cats gathering around from the scent of milk. The driver gets out and puts a bucket under the rear valve. He opens the valve and allows fresh unpasteurized milk flow into a bucket. Shoo cats, this milk is for the orphans, orphans of the Republic of Russia.

It didn't take long to find out this was a way of life in Russia, yes there were some rich (usually Russian Mafia), but the remainder were living in soviet built apartments and what looked like garages. The Russians do enjoy some luxaries, such as fresh flowers. There were vendors everywhere selling fresh flowers. They also use shoes as a status symbol, they judge you by the shoes you wear. Open air markets with fresh produce and other consumer goods were very popular.

Over ten years later, we are seeing emerging teenagers, not Russian, but American citizens, talking and complaining and wanting, wanting like every American kid. Their thirst goes on, they want Nintindos, iPods and cell phones. Trouble in school with math, science and literature. Just like any other kid.

The struggle goes on, kids trying to be kids, trying to find new friends. Some understand and some don't. These children came from a half continent away, but are able to adapt, are viable and are really intelligent. It just takes time to nurture them and the patience to endure their complaining and rages. With time they will be old enough to experience what they have become. We are just glad we were able to bring them into an environment that will hopefully prime them for a better adult life.
