Dining Manners In Countries

New Year is at the trigger and everybody is excited of the exploration on new destinations. How people in each country behave during the meal is one of the most important things that needed taking a look at. Fully understanding the dining manners of parties will help you much during travelling and exploring the culture and cuisine of each country and cuisines of countries around the world. Although there are lots of similarities in dishes of Asian culinary and European ones but the ways to enjoy them are different.

1. UK

The British is well known for their strict requirements and high standards, especially in the dining from seat arrangement to dishes, glasses or cups tidying in the table… Before eating, you have to turn your dish upside down, turning it up is considered to be rude. You are not allowed to hold the fork in your right hand and the knife in your left hand since they claim it is the impolite manner.

While the American eats pizza, chip fries and fast food by hand, the British is totally different, especially in restaurants. The British often use fork and knife for most of their dishes except for soup. When finishing, they often put their silverware in the middle of the dish in order for the waiter to know the meal is over.

2. France

In most French restaurants, you will be usually served a basket of bread first, but be patient for the main ones. When having bread, it is illicit to break it into pieces and clip them in sauce by hand but you have to use fork. During the meal, you are not allowed to make sound. No toothpick and belching in front of the other people are recommended.

The way you sit is also mentioned. Straight figure fitting the chair and napkins on your knees are some main principles. When having wine, you should taste it slowly and enjoy it. When the meal is over, all of the fork, spoon and knife should be gathered together and put parallelly on the dish, not crossing each other.

3. Italy

Each culture requires a different/unique way to enjoy and explore its meaning. For example, at Italian restaurants, we should not ask for extra cheese if you are not specially served.

You should have some coffee after the meal, and avoid calling some dairy items which will prevent you from digesting it. You could leave some tips from 5-10%.

4. Japan

Japanese people care much about the form and the quality of the dishes, thus the cuisine of this country is rather diverse and sophisticated. You are not allowed to use your hands since the philosophy is that eating by hand is dirty and you should use chopsticks instead. They are also serious about the shape, flavor and the way of arranging the dining table; therefore, each person might have their own dish and sauce.

There may be lots of dishes but the amount of each dish is not various and you have to slowly enjoy your meal. It is absolutely prohibited to leave the takeover on the table or down on the floor.

With sushi, you should not take the part inside offthe rice. If you are having meal at restaurant, hotel, you should not leave tips, which could be considered as a rude manner in Japan.

5. Korean

The Korean people pay much attention to social classification; therefore, if you are invited for meal, you should bring a gift to the host.

When starting to eat, the younger have to ask the older for wine, and when the senior pass the glass of wine to the younger, the younger have to take it with their two hands. This is regarded as the politeness in the country of kimchi.

The Korean meal is very varied, including a lot of dishes, which makes you care more about the way of appropriate dining. For example, spoon is just for rice, chopsticks are for the others. The main dishes will be placed on the middle of the table, and you need to share food for the other people.

6. India

Asian countries have their own styles of dining. Do not get panic when arriving in India and realizing everyone here uses their right hands to eat, as well as in Indonesia and Malaysia. They don’t use knife, fork or chopsticks; therefore, it would be better to wash your hands before eating and especially left hands are prohibited.

You should finish your helping and it would be considered a disrespect to leave food on your dish. Also, eating with the medium speed or flow is a great etiquette instead of quickly finishing your dish.

7. Thailand

In Thailand, many dishes can be served at once, not in order as the other countries. These can be arranged in an appropriate way on the table for everyone to easily share the dishes.

You should not use the fork to eat, and remember to use your spoon to share the food from the big dish instead. And you should not eat the last piece of food in the big dish, as well.
