Go to Tanzania and enjoy an unique African safari in the the amazing Ngorongoro crate floor. The Ngorongoro crater floor has the largest concentration of predators on earth and about 22,000 grazing animals. It is an amazing landscape for an unforgettable African safari. One is able to experience multiple climate and landscape changes within the conservation area from the cool alpine air to the hot and dry heat of the African lowland savanna in a short time span.
The Ngorongoro crater is the largest unbroken collapsed crater in the world with a variety of flora and fauna and is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. An area so special, it has been declared a world heritage site and biosphere area by UNESCO. Some say it is the eighth wonder of the world while others call it the garden of Eden. One has to experience it, to believe it. The crater floor is home to a wide diversity of bird life and wildlife within its 550 meters deep and 300 km square area.
As the lodge tour vehicle descends from our wildlife lodge in the mid morning sun to the crater floor, the weather changes from the cool of the highland forest to the heat of the open African savanna and grassland. The landscape also opens unto to grassy lowland with connected ponds, pools and a small lake. Round the edge of the lake is a swathe of pink visible from the horizon which turns out to be flocks of the lesser flamingos feeding on the saline water.
On the ponds and pools are groups of hippos half submerged and no doubt enjoying the a bask. We drive further on and come face to face with a herd of elephants lazily feeding on grass . They pay no attention to us and as we drive on, a lone buffalo with some birds perched on its back with a no nonsense demeanor dismisses us with a casual look and slowly turns away.
Within a space of 3 hours , we manage to see all the "big five " the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and the elusive black rhino and an entire wildlife food chain from the rare cheetah, wildebeest, zebras, monkeys, gazelles up to scavengers like hyenas and wild dogs. To see so many wild animals within such a short time is even by African standards a record. All round the top of the crater rim in the horizon is the greenly of the forest cover.
Our Lodge which is strategically perched on the crater rim can be seen as a dark silhouette against the mid day sun .By now it is quite hot .The crater floor is an ornithological paradise. A wide variety of birds are to be found in the crater floor and a hundred species that are not found in the neighboring Serengeti national park. Big birds like Ostrich, lesser flamingos, cranes, herons among many others are all resident on the crater floor.
Having enjoyed an unique African safari, we ascend back to our wildlife lodge to view more of the crater from the rim at the lodge's viewing deck.
