It has been called the biggest bird spectacle on earth. Thousands upon thousands of flamingos on the shores of lake Nakuru in the Kenya's eastern Great Rift Valley. We start our Lake Nakuru safari early from our hotel in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi courtesy of Lion Trails Safaris for a one day safari to the Lake Nakuru National Park and other attractions along the way. Our LionTrails Safaris tour bus climbs steadily down the Nairobi escarpment in a one hour drive to the edge of the eastern wall of the great rift valley.
We alight for photographic break at the a Great Rift Valley view point. The rift wall is steep where the valley slid down around 5 million years ago. Our guide informs us the Great Rift Valley extends 6000 km all the way from the dead sea to East Africa. The View below is simply breathtaking. We experience a fantastic view of the landscape below including the shimmering Lake Naivasha in the distance.
It is time to move on and we start our descent but stop soon after at another view point, this time round it's a young dormant volcano Mount Longonot. The volcano crater is surrounded by v shaped valleys and ridges and we can see right into the crater. We continue our descent and shortly after, we arrive at the floor of the valley.
We detour left into Hell"s Gate National Park . Hell's Gate National Park is very picturesque and despite its intimidating name, has beautiful and spectacular features of towers, gorges and cliffs. It also has small volcanoes and hot water steam vents. We come across zebras, buffaloes, eland, Thomson gazelles, giraffes, warthogs and families of primates. We don't get to see the predators but we are informed the park is home to some lions, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. We also see an incredible variety of birds.
After an educative and informative lecture by our guide Henry of Lion Trails Safaris on Hell'sGate and its diversity. We leave the park and head towards Lake Nakuru National Park where we arrive at the gate after 60 minutes. After a short distance, we come to the shores of Lake Nakuru and spread all round the edges of Lake Nakuru is a pink mass of millions of flamingos feeding in the shallow waters as they continuously move about. It is a very beautiful scenery. Flocks of birds take to the air just above the water and move in one direction for short distances.
We climb up to the baboon cliff for the best view of the Lake Nakuru and its surrounding. We continue on the game drive around the lake and meet the rare black rhino and the white rhino. Our Lion Trails Safaris guide Henry tells us the Lake Nakuru National Park is home to 450 species of birds making it a truly bird lovers paradise. It is also the first rhino sanctuary in the country. We drive on out of Lake National Park having truly enjoyed our one day Lake Nakuru safari thanks to Lion Trails Safaris
