Making The Move To Spain

Your mind is made up and you are going and it's time to get organised, it all looks a bit daunting at first so many things to do and so many people to see before you go. Well don’t get in a tizzy stay relaxed and just do one thing at a time because once you are there this is the the way the Spanish do things.

If you have a house to sell this has got to be your first priority, whether you need the money from the house sale or not it is much easier to sell up before you go and not have to keep commuting backwards and forward to sign solicitor’s letters etc. Also are you selling the house fully furnished or are you selling the furniture separately or maybe you want to keep it in storage and ship it over, I decided to sell all my furniture but I wish I would have kept some of it and shipped it over when we were settled but that is just how I felt. You are bound to have some things which you want to take so look in your local newspapers for companies who do regular commutes and get quotes for shipping it over as prices differ tremendously.

If you have decided to rent your house out make sure you have a reputable company who will manage this for you, don't even attempt to manage it yourself as you will be in a different country and communicating if something goes wrong can be stressful

if you don't want to leave it with a lettings company get a close friend or family member to take charge for you, many things can go wrong in a house and the people who are paying you the rent will not expect to deal with these things, you are the owner and it is your responsibility to sort them out. Silly things like the fridge freezer packing up, or the central heating going on the blink need to be sorted and it is much easier when whoever is responsible is in the same country believe me.

If you haven’t already done so I would suggest you get yourself somewhere to stay, like a holiday let for at least the first fortnight as this way when you get there you can check out the local properties for rent personally not just a photo and description on the internet, seeing it for yourself is much better, you can check out the area, go in local bars and meet the locals. Once you commit to a long term rental you sign a contract for 11 months minimum and if you haven't visited the area and met the locals you may find that you hate it and 11 months is a long time to be stuck somewhere you hate and find is too far away from shops, work and other amenities, so take a holiday let first and take your time choosing the right place believe me you will live to regret it if you don't.

Once you have found your holiday let you can now book your flights, or book your flights first and then find a holiday let, be careful not to go in peak time as you will have difficulty finding somewhere to stay and may end up paying an arm and a leg, avoid July and August as these are the main holiday months and also the heat is unbearable, you won't feel like doing anything let alone searching for somewhere to live. Also check out when local Fiestas take place as the price of rentals increases tremendously when these events are taking place. I would also avoid Easter time as this is bigger than Christmas in SpainOK all booked, possessions packed and ready to ship only thing left to do is say goodbye to all your friends and family, well its not goodbye really just Adios as you will only be a few hour flight away, quicker than traveling from say Newcastle to London. When we moved we arranged a party in our local pub which was great because it got everyone together in one place at the same time. If you are going to do this I would do it a few days before you go so you have time to see the people who maybe couldn’t make it to the party and also it’s not a good idea to have a party one night and travel the next day, BAD MOVE.

Well that is basically it, easy peasy just stay organized and don’t panic because the biggest adventure of your life is just about to begin and I’m sure you will enjoy every minute of it just like we did
