My First Treasure Hunt (geocacheing)

Have you ever Geocached before? Not sure if that is what you call it but because I am a newbie that is the name I will give it.

(Geo): have or relate to the earth.

(Cache): A hidden or inaccessible hiding place for valuables/ treasures.

Geocacheing started out with some adventure seekers hiding treasures in the earth. These same people then decided they wanted to share this adventure with other fellow treasure hunters by sharing the GPS coordinate's online, so that anyone can find a hidden cache for a great adventure.

The Rock house

My hubby and I went this weekend for the first time “what a blast”. We visited three sites. One of the sites name is the Rock House. We signed and dated the books that they provided, also read names of others that had found hidden caches, checked out the goodies that were there and put our goodies in. Then off to the next adventure, “It is not as easy as it sounds”.

If you think that this is something you might want to try. It starts at the computer. Look up Geocaching “in Google of course”. I pushed the button that read play in the dashboard. There was a drop down I clicked on the words hide and seek, when that window appeared, I just put in my zip code and there were the caches that were close to my whereabouts. Now the more experienced Geocache enthusiast put in the zip code wherever they are and find all that are near them.

Check out this great site

If you have a GPS use the instructions to put them in your device, if you do not have a GPS, “have no fear”. This sites set up to work with different smart phones.

I have an iphone so I downloaded the same Geocache app on my phone and I looked up the sites closet to us, and off we went!

The GPS and the iphone work a little different, I used my phone and my husband used his GPS. Both ways we were able to find the site we were looking for.

There are two settings on the Geocache app for your phone, one's called compass the other's called maps, both work great. You will need to try them to see which setting you like.

Finally there it is

After following whatever device you want. What fun it is when you reach your destination, and bingo! there's the cache! Look at all the fun stuff, don’t forget if you take something out, put something back in, that is part of the rules that they list on the site.

If you do decide this is something you would like to explore, read all you can about your destination, find out if it tells you what you are looking for and if you need to travel by land or boat or whatever. You need to know this information so that you can properly prepare for the fun your about to have.

Please no spoilers

Can’t write a spoiler, which is what a fellow Geocacher lectured me on. He is a friend of ours that has explored and found more than 500 of these on the east coast. With that being said, you can see these exciting treasures are hidden all over the world.

Aw, I got an honorable mention in your article. Thanks. I have been caching for a few years and have even visited the first one ever put out East of the Mississippi. A lovely view of the Naples Valley. I have found parks with Caches that I never knew existed, fell into creeks while trying to reach a tough one and all sorts of fun adventures. The dog even ate a cache container once and I had to walk back to the car to get a replacement for it. This is a fun way to learn about mapping, hiking and being prepared for just about anything that nature or devious cache owners can throw at you. Thanks for posting this, I hope you enjoy the new sport that I have introduced you to.

I love that you did it and wrote about it and I must say that you have found a "niche"!!! I can't wait till my daughter gets back this summer to go and do this with her. I'll be homeschooling her again this year so this will be so much fun. I do have a question though, you stated about not writing a spoiler, does that mean you are not allowed to share what is in the treasure box with others online? Great article Kymee and I'm so looking forward to following your geocaching adventures as well as start my own. :) Audrey

Spoilers give away the exact location of the cache. This makes it easy for the next person if they have read the previous cache logs to find the cache. Some are hidden very deviously and the fun is finding it.

Yes, I'm sure they'd love it too! Oh, the G+ hangout is on every Friday? Well, it sure would be great to meet you too. Hmm, I've always wondered about that, do i need to have a webcam or anything special to go on there? I've never really done the hangout thing at all yet, but I really should quit being a chicken about it, lol.

It is nice to have a camera, it is not necessary though. The nice thing to have is a mic, then we can hear your voice and it is easier to talk. or else you can chat live like you do in WA then it is just typing... Loved to see you come. or hear you. ' O)

Sounds like fun. Of course anything to do with treasure, hunting, and outdoors is always fun...Unless of course you run into Poison ivy, hornets nests, or mean reptiles (2 legged kind are the worse) One day soon I will get a gps and go take some of my friends or family members along. Thanks for writing and sharing...Stay safe!

Good article. It got me interested. Why don't you put a link to a GPS from Amazon so old fashioned people like me who don't have a GPS can buy one and you can get credit. A friend from Kansas used to do this all the time, and until I read your article I didn't really understand what it was all about. Thanks for sharing.
