Why do we travel? To relax or to discover something new, see beautiful places? I think there are many reasons for traveling. It's not going to hurt if we add banal 'meeting new people' to the list of reason. Let's discuss 'meeting new people' in United Kingdom. There is no telling if it was luck but people we met during our journey were great and very helpful.
For example, finding directions can be tricky and you can't always rely on your navigator. That is when you use old-fashioned ways and ask people around you. With a few helpful mates I still personally keep in touch. This is one more reason for traveling 'making friends'. You don't really know who you are going to meet and when. Advice: don't be shy when you need help. Another interesting fact we encountered was difficulties with British accents. The more you move to the north the sicker accents, especially when you get to Scotland and Ireland. Don't irritate people too much by asking them to repeat. If you don’t understand at all, just nod and move to another person for advice or right direction.
The very first thing you should know is that in UK people drive on the left. If you are from another country, it's going to take some time getting used to. Nevertheless, when you've conquered left side driving and it becomes easier on the second day of the road trip. Our team didn't come to UK by car but rented a nice one and got on the road. You can do that right at the airport or find a renting service in the city. We used a website with rental cars and there is also a map with rental services all around London, very helpful. There was no exact plan for us about what places to visit and what roads to take. Every day we made that decision spontaneously. That was the best about our road trip. Nothing was holding us back and we created our own perfect vacation.
At some cities we've stayed more than one day. We've traveled from London to Glasgow and from there we headed to Dublin, Ireland. Distance between London and Glasgow is 663 kilometres or 412 miles, PLUS we also visited some other cities, so approximately we drove at about 800 kilometres. It took us 5 days because of our stops at Oxford, Liverpool and Manchester. To get from Glasgow to Dublin we used car ferry. That is the only way to get there by car, no problems with navigation at all. We used old-fashioned map, city guides and online navigators. All the paper maps and guides you can buy at any store in London or right at the airport. Online we used site that showed distance between UK cities because our car navigator sometimes glitched.
Currency in UK is pounds. Want some tips? Don't let small prices trick you. And by small prices I mean 5 pounds or 20. It doesn't sounds too much but when you start processing and translating your expenses in your national currency, you can be shocked. UK is expensive country. Of course, if you don't pay attention to how much you spend then there is nothing to worry about. But if you actually care about that, stay careful because your money can disappear very quickly. You can use converter apps or online currency converter for better understanding of prices.
After that revelation we started to count our expenses. We did calculated petrol expenses and our car rental payments. Another essential questions 'Did something bad or obnoxious happened?'. We didn't see anything criminal or bad during our journey. Maybe it was sheer luck again or maybe UK is very safe for real. But if you have an emergency remember that in UK emergency number is 999. It's better to buy a local sim card, they are available at the airports or you can find a store in the city. We used Vodafone, no complains. Communication will be less expensive and easier for you with local sim card. You can add internet to your package at the store.
What about hotels or places to stay. We moved a lot from city to city and we didn't have a plan for booking hotels. In London we stayed 5 days and the hotel was booked in advance, we used 'booking'. But after that we used airbnb. Amazing service. You pick a city and choose from the list of available apartments to rent. Driving distance between cities UK is not huge so the journey wasn't very tiring.
History and nature impressed us the most. Breathtaking views were incredible. You can buy a tour guide book or if you like there are tons of excursion to book. Pick options that you like the most. 'Abrupt cliffs with raging ocean' sceneries exceeded my expectations. Scotland and Ireland are full of history, mysterious castles will take you to medieval times. In the movies they look amazing but in person the views are unbelievably stunning. For sure, British people know how to present themselves and their country's legacy. Go explore and have fun!
