Searching for Gold Mines With A GPS

Following an arrow first left and then the arrow turns the direction towards a mountain front. Okay, how are we going to go that direction? Oh look! We can climb up these rocks to the clearing, past that Ocotillo in the direction the arrow is pointing to. Few more detours and WOW! There was an old gold mine. How cool is that?

Have a great Family weekend adventure.

My husband and I were looking for a new adventure so we went on a hunt for patented claims. My husband spent the days before our new exploration searching an area where we like to go camping, hiking and off-roading. He found on the GPS mapping three different mines in this area that he wanted to explore.

Saturday morning came, with our boots on and with plenty of water. We set out from our favorite camping spot in the town of Borrego Springs, California with the GPS on, heading towards our first mine

Mind you I was very skeptical; however I am always up for a day in the desert. I love hiking in the beautiful warm sunshine, especially in the spring when the wild flowers landscape the desert floor with many colors.

“Wow! This is really neat”.While driving along the highway watching the arrow on the GPS it turns suddenly to no mans land. Now finding a place to park, which is not easy to do because this has been an abandoned mine for many years. Meaning it is off in some random place unknown to the people of today.

Really We need to go that way?

There were times we were doing a little rock hopping, as well as a bit of mountain climbing. Visualize we are with cactus, brush and lizards. Thankfully we did not run into anything poisonous. The cholla cactus “aka jumping cactus” is something to watch for. Wow! They really hurt going in as well as when you take them out. I have learned from the desert old timers to carry a hair comb for just this purpose.

We found all three lost mines that day, every one of them was just as exciting as the last one. Some had remains of buildings scattered about, half buried in the sand and under the mesquite bushes. Others still had some of the timbers used for retaining the walls. Either way I could visualize the way those old miners lived.

At the end of the day getting some great Mexican food at the local restaurant to take back to the RV. We realized there has not been anyone at these places for many years, and really unless you were two silly people following an arrow there is no reason to be there. most likely there will be no other human beings at those long forgotten sites again. Maybe there are other unstable people who follow their GPS you think?

So if staying home on the couch, or doing the many chores that I feel will still be there when you get home, doesn’t appeal to you. Then I think that you should try this as a great outdoor adventure.

Tools for the silly people trade:

1.GPS (ours was a Magellan)

2.Hair comb (for those run ins with a jumping cactus)

3.Good pair of sturdy boots

4.Lots of water

5.Sun screen and a hat.

6.Explorative spirit and a great imagination.

This is a satellite system technology and can use it anywhere. If you are on the couch I will never get to see you out there

God bless

Kymee

Please if this sounds fun and you have questions don't hesitate to ask.

Great article. It's funny to hear of all the different things you have to watch out for in the different parts of the USA. Here in Florida you watch out for the Fire Ants and Alligators. LOL Do you ever do Geocaching? When I was homeschooling my kids I always wanted to do this but never got around to it. I've been thinking about doing it more and more now that I only have one left and she is hardly ever home. By the way you're site is looking great and so full of great information on RV's (which is something that I see in my future very soon) and the great outdoors. Audrey

Kymee, Oh how I miss the western US. The deserts, the high trails, the canyons and arroyos , and the beautiful Southwesten sunsets. I don't miss the cholla, the gila monsters and the sidewinders so much though, or the tarantulas for that matter. I didn't have a GPS back then, so exploring meant compass, map and a good reference point. Think I'll go exploring the hill regions of north Georgia this week end.I still have my compass...No I'll borrow my son's cell phone It has GPS lol Once again.. K
