South East Asia Travel Guide

So, you know where your going but you do not have a guide. Fear not there are literally hundreds out there.

If you have the money I would suggest getting Country specific travel guides. South East Asia guides are fine, however the most detailed guides are always going to be country specific. If you haven't got the money that's fine as well. Simply buy the travel guide for the country you are going to first (i'm presuming Thailand). Most of the guesthouses you visit will have the option for a book exchange, where you can swap your Thailand guide for a Laos or Cambodian one, whatever you like.

Here are a few reasons why you may want to get a county specific one.

Knowing where to stay

Often when travelling you may be armed with the name of a guesthouse or two which you may have researched. The advantage of having a travel guide is (a) - they will have stopped in the majority of the guesthouses and reviewed them all, and (b) - if other travellers have the same guide your guaranteed not to be lonely. This is the main reason why travel guides are put together. Its one thing seeing the wonders of the world, its another knowing where to stay while you are seeing them, afterall everybody loves a nice bed at the end of the day.

Knowing where to go

They offer insights into the best places to go to suit your needs. If you are after a real travelling trip, living with the locals, working the rice farms etc then a place like Vang Vieng may not be for you (if you are a bit of a party person, this place is definately for you). Guides will give you very specific details on towns, especially if you buy a travelling guide for countries instead of a general guide for South East Asia.

The best places to eat and drink

You'll probably only be staying in towns for 3 or 4 days at a time so this bit is important. You don't want your experience of a town or village ruined by bad food, bad drinks or lack of people. Travel guides not only show you the best places to eat and drink but you can also be safe in the knowledge other travellers will be there.

So which is the best travel guide?

I personally would use the Lonely Planet series, however part of the fun of travelling is doing something that nobody else has done, so don't spend you time buried in a book. Use the guide books as just that, a guide, but always remember this is your trip and you know what you like, above all have fun and safe travels.
