South East Asia - Travelling

You think you are ready to do a bit of South East Asia Travelling? Or are you still doing your research?

Fear not, there are thousands of websites that offer you advice, tips and checklists to help you plan your trip of a lifetime.

Please find below what I think will be your initial thoughts regarding your travel.

Is it safe?

Probably the biggest question and the one that your mum is definately going to ask first, whatever your age. From personal experience I couldn't have felt safer in South East Asia. When meeting people there was never a "you don't want to go there, its a bit dangerous" moment. In fact I can't recall ever being warned away from somewhere. There was talk of petty crime, pick pocketing and the like, however never once did I hear about an instance of violent crime or a serious offence and was never myself a victime of crime. I wasn't overly cautious, I just knew when not to get my ipad out (example only, I don't have an ipad).

Is it cheap?

In a word, yes. Compared to the Western world Asia is a very cheap place to travel. The cheapest alcohol we found was in Vietnam which for a 1 litre botle of whiskey (or rum we couldn't be sure, the bottle said rum but we were all in agreement it was whiskey) the cost was $1.50. Needless to say that was a good night. The food is not only cheap but amazing. I recall going with a group of around 10 people to a street stall. What can only be described as a feast awaited us with bottles of beer all round. Total cost around $15, total satisfaction . . . well I'm still talking about it now.

What are the people like?

The friendliest people you will ever meet. In my opinion the Vietnamese were by far the friendliest, however from discussing this with fellow travellers it seems I am in the minority with the majority going for the Cambodians. Wherever you go, however, you will struggle to find a place where people do not greet you with a smile and a handshake or a nod of the head.

Is it easy to get around?

Some would say too easy, everything just seems to work. You can walk into a travel agent a book a bus/train ticket for somewhere 500 miles away (normally for around $5-$15). You'll get a ticket that will more than likely be exchanged for a sticker at some point and pointed to a bus stop. From here it will be a recurring theme of jumping on a bus for a few hours, getting off the bus for someone to great you and take you to a further bus or boat. This will happen 3 or 4 times with you having a clue what is happening. Don't be alarmed though, I always ended up where i wanted to and the bus journies are so laid back. You will be surrounded by people who are also travelling who also have no idea where they are at the current time but are just enjoying life.

If you haven't bought your ticket yet then why not? South East Asia is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and a piece of each country will stay with you forever. Once you go I guarantee you will get the travelling bug, a condition to which there is no cure.
