Treasure Hunting With A Potato?

Don’t bring a potato when Geocaching.

Have you ever heard of anyone hitting a burro while driving on the highway? Two a.m. standing in the middle of the road was a great big burro; thank God we did not hit him. Hitting a burro would have completely ruined our night and our whole trip.

This near miss happened to us on our trip taking my daughter to hygiene school.

Starting in Cali, we traveled to our destination, Boise, Id., stopping only four hours to sleep at a truck stop.

My youngest daughter lives only five hours from Boise, so we decided to meet half way in McCall, Idaho for family fun on Labor Day. We were lucky enough to have friends that are native to the area that gave us a nice warm place to stay. We all love hiking and there are so many beautiful places to hike. So we decided to go geocaching, which can include both a hike and an exciting treasure hunt.

Off we go to hike and look for ONE cache (notice “one” is in all caps).

“Should we bring the dogs? Yeah, it’s just up the road according to my iphone,” my daughter says.

Here we go! My two girls, our friend, and her two dogs (one we nick-named Spud because an overweight Corgi can look just like a big Idaho potato).

Well, what we thought would be a quick jaunt down the road (following that arrow on my daughter’s iphone), really turned out to it was two miles. First cache found! We wrote our names in the guest book and put a little trinket in the cache for the next treasure hunter.

Hmm! One more? Should we?

My daughter informed us that there was another cache close by, so we set off to follow the arrow again. The clue “Big Twin” was a tremendous help. I don’t want spoil it for you, but I will tell you that we found the second one. (pretty clever clue I say)

OK one last one?

Although we needed to head home, curiosity got the best of us and we began to follow that tempting arrow again. Based on the clues and the changes in environment, this cache was a little harder to find, but that’s why you bring your friends; they’ll help you find it. Two heads are better than one. (sometime theirs’ is better than yours)

Uh oh! Went too far for the Spud, and we are lost.

We realized another important reason to bring a friend that is familiar with the area you are hiking around in. We were all paying more attention to the arrow than where we started our hike. Now looking around, we realized that we had travelled two miles, and did not know our way back.

Now,two miles is not a great distance, especially for dogs like Athena, the bigger dog which was created for the mountains; she could go twenty miles just fine. But our little Spud had now gone two miles on legs that are only two inches high. Two more miles and we’d have a mashed potato, so thus the warning to not bring a spud on a geocaching trip. (Unless it really "is" a short jaunt)

The dual-purpose iphone saves the day.

Another great use for an iphone: we called for a ride for our tater tot. My friend’s son picked up Spud and we continued our enjoyable walk back.

I love to go Geocaching. No matter where you travel, you can include an adventure. That adventure will be added to your thousands of priceless memories, and in this case, also many mosquito bites. We will now be including bug spray in our kit for treasure hunting,

For me this Labor Day was a win-win. I was able to celebrate it with both of my daughters. We saw many great things, visited natural hot springs, shopped until we dropped, hiked many miles to see Lake Cascade and geochached to our hearts’ content. It doesn’t get better than that!

You need to download the app. (easy peasy lemon squeezy)

If you are new to this sport, visit some of my other articles that give more detailed instructions on how to take friends and family on an exciting excursion. Remember if you are going a great distance: leave the tater home.

That is great! I really want to try geocaching. I may get the app soon and try it. I know what it can be like to get "lost" in what you are doing and also, one time, had my dog with us thinking we would only go about 2 miles, but kept going for 6 total miles.... he was really upset with me (my dog :))

I wouldn't have been able to do "just ONE" treasure hunt either. ;) Looks like you are having many adventures and being able to spend time with the family doing them. That is wonderful. One of these days I WILL go geocaching and I'm so glad I know someone that will be able to answer any questions I may have about it. Keep on keeping on my friend. Be Blessed, Audrey
