There are a few questions that pop up in our heads when we think about traveling expenses. What is better: cash or credit card? Is it safer to bring actual money with you or pay with cards? Let’s see look closer into those two options.
If you think about taking cash with you instead of cards, it’s going to solve a few problems. First, you can exchange currency easily at public places like airport, banks and even malls. Second, you won’t have to think about paying additional charges for withdrawing money from ATMs. Those ATMs are going to be of local banks and companies. Not many international banks can offer free of charge withdrawals. Third, not all markets, stores or cafes accept cards as payment. You pay cash for taxies, public transportation etc.
Let’s see what a credit card can offer. Cards are more convenient in highly developed countries. Such states allow you to pay with credit cards practically everywhere. You won’t need a lot of cash with you, only some small amount for special occasions. Of course, if you are a tourist you should always think about safety. A lot of thieves prefer tourists because they have money and are not very suspicious of people around them. Cash can be easily stolen. Credit cards are also exposed to thievery but you can block it before anyone can get a chance to withdraw any money. There is also a fact that currency exchange rates can be quite high if you withdraw local currency while you have a card with your country’s currency, e.g. you have USD card and you are in Mexico so you’ll need Mexican Peso. Such operations can cost you some extra charges. To see the real situation, look for online currency rates.
Before you go abroad contact your bank and find out about exchange rates. If it’s not possible or you don’t have time, download an app with converters (they usually go with all types of metric systems, so it’ll be extra convenient for you) or you can use online currency converter. Pick any options that suits you best. Don’t fully rely on your plastic card. If it’s stolen, you are left with no money at all. As with everything in our world, you should find balance between your cash and credit/debit cards. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. That saying works all the time, no exceptions. Stay on alert but don't forget to have fun during your trip too.
