Good content thrives on storytelling, whether a video is based on facts, is informative or persuasive; it requires a deep narrative to go along with the visuals to engage your audience. Amidst the hustle of social media and YouTube, maybe marketing lost its deep underlying connection with storytelling. Marketers kept focusing on mediums such as TV or radio but lost the bigger picture, a narrative that holds the information together. Stories have been around since time immemorial and quite possibly were the prime source of entertainment of our fore fathers.
So why do we need an engrossing story? How can a better narrative help our content and help us get our message across.
Stories can be experienced
A powerful story when narrated well has the potential to really connect on an emotional level; a genuine story is relatable either literally or metaphorically. They evoke emotion and inspire people, either verbalized in voice or through written word, engages ones imagination and allows people to envision and relate to the story.
Can Encapsulate Information
Let’s face it, facts are like bitter pills, they are plain, bland and though they aid in the process of consumption, they are quiet painful. When information is packaged within a story it makes the facts appear more interesting, and the story begins to function like a glue that allows the information to stick in our head. We may forget the facts if presented at face value, but when packaged in a story, it helps us remember those facts much better, which can be a very powerful tool.
They Inspire You
Stories inspire you; a good narrative will draw emotion from the observer. They possess a very passive call to action. A well crafted story inspires the audience to walk in the footsteps of the protagonist or learn from their mistakes, and seek information that can lead to actionable results.
Share-ability
How many of your grand dads stories have you told to others? A good story will stand the test of time; it has the potential to turn into folklore. With the advent of social media the share-ability of the stories has gone through the roof, and through multiple iterations the message gets internalized.
Your content can carry incredible visuals, vistas and even a powerful score, but if the content lacks the narrative which brings perspective to the added visuals, it will not be able to deliver the message you seek nor will it lead to the action you desire.
