Souk in Dubai
Souks are the traditional Arabic market places where goods are bought and sold. Originally, boats or dhows from the neighboring countries as well as India, Ceylon, China and the Far East unloaded their wares at the souks. Traders from around the world brought with them a variety of merchandise and "haggled" over the sales and purchases. In the modern times or today, souks are still markets but they are just a shadow of their former wonder. Dubai has a number of souks scattered all over the city. Dubai souks are bright, colorful, noisy and fascinating like any other market place.
Dubai souks are located in Deira and Bur Dubai. The two predominant areas are separated by the Dubai Creek. Shoppers can hop on to the abras or small boats if they want to visit souks on the other side of Creek. Over the years, the goods traded at the Dubai souks have evolved and changed. Now you find commodities like gold, textiles, spices, perfumes and even fisheries.
Gold souks are numerous in Dubai. Tourists are known to woefully complain that they are spoiled for choice and haven’t had enough time to check out all the shops. Dubai’s gold souks have a long standing reputation and a few tourists visit the city for the sole purpose of buying gold. The gold souks are featuring the most popular jewellers and international gold jewellery brands too.
Dubai textile souks are a dream come true for shopaholics. Radiant silks and a host of other luxurious fabrics are sold at the textile souks. These souks are located on Al Fahidi Street, Bur Dubai.
Who ever imagined an entire market place just for spices! Well there’s not one, but several of them and is one of the most exotic Dubai souks. The spice souks are located opposite the gold souks in Deira and are a paradise for food lovers. You can purchase fresh spices and have them packed in quaint little pouches. This makes your experience a little more authentic. The perfume souks are situated on the Sikkat Al Khail Street, Dubai. Unlike other perfume stores, these Dubai souks have a spicy aroma emanating from them. You can purchase traditional fragrances as well as custom made scents which complement your skin type and your personality.
The Dubai fish souks are well, smelly and crowded. You can see for yourself the new stock being unloaded, cleaned and made ready for sales. This is only for ones with strong stomachs – the sights and smells can get to some people.
Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Souk Al Bahar, Khan Murjan, Meena Bazaar, Naif Souk et al are a few of the more modern Dubai Souks. These souks are vibrant and a mixture of then and now. These places encourage the works of local artisans and bring back the magic of the Middle East. Dubai souks look a trifle tired and worn out as they have been caught in the midst of rapid urbanization. The souks are now bearing the brunt of modernity. Amongst all the traditional stores lie cheap electronic and shoe stores. But if you want to experience "local culture", a visit to the Dubai souks is a must.
