Internet marketing for small businesses - Five essential tips for success:

1. Learn to drive targeted traffic to your site. I used to think the way to drive traffic to your site was by just telling people about it, getting the word out (certainly this is one way) but the fact is every day people make millions of searches and there are people who are actually looking for exactly what I have to offer. They just can't find me and I can't find them. One of the most key components in internet marketing is to learn to do keyword research.

There are numerous tools available (some free, some cost money) to help me research what people are looking for and how much competition I am facing for that particular key term. As a rule of thumb the longer the keyword (it's actually a phrase but that is how we call it) the more likely that I will have less competition for that key term.

There are paid ways (PPC) and free ways to drive traffic to my site (article marketing). Internet marketing for small businesses is largely about learning to drive the proper traffic to my site. Without traffic I have no potential customers.

2. Develop relevant landing pages for your traffic. What do I mean by this? Whether I am using article marketing (where I write on a given topic using a particular keyword) or running a PPC campaign with Google, I need to send the visitors that click on my link in my ad or article to a page on my website that is relevant to what they were searching for in the first place. On that page I need to show why what I have to offer is relevant to what they were looking for. The higher the relevancy, the more potential for conversion.

3. Develop a SEO friendly website. What do I mean by that? Internet marketing for small businesses involves setting up one or more websites with a keyword domain (with enough searches and low competition) and lot of pages with the keyword in the title. This is what we call search engine optimization. I optimize the website so that the search engines like Google will list it (hopefully on the first page) when people do certain searches. If done right, this will give me a lot of free traffic.

4. Internet marketing for small businesses takes time. As it is with any business attempt true success normally comes with time and effort. Persist at it. Learn all you can about internet marketing. It will be well worth your investment (whether it be time and/or money).

5. Get the best training possible. Anyone who runs a good business knows the importance of ongoing training. The internet changes constantly. It is essential to get training on how to do marketing on today's internet. The rules of the game have changed. Some things don't work anymore, other things still work but require a different approach. You need to access training that keeps up with the trends of internet marketing. Seek a professional to get help if you are new at internet marketing. I have been greatly helped by having access to people who know how internet marketing works, have been very successful and can personally look at what I am doing and give me direction.

Success at internet marketing for small businesses is very possible with the proper training and help.
