I recently watched a video where Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was asked by a congressman about the Feds effect on savings accounts especially those of seniors. His answer was quick and without much emotion. His answer was that he felt the Fed had to hold interest rates at the artifically low rate to spur the economy. Well so much for those of us that have most of our money in savings because we can’t risk our money in the markets.
The actions of Congress and the Federal Reserve has put a lot of seniors in the position that they will have to continue at their present position if they can or find another job if they can’t stay at their current job. I still can’t figure out how we got to the point that a few people at the Federal Reserve can have such a negative influence on such a large number of people.
That being said, a lot of us will need to find supplemental income. So what is out there that we can do. Actually there are quite a few options. There are options because employers know most seniors will be good employees. They will show up on time, they will show up sober and they won’t **** and moan about every little thing.
So lets list a few of the jobs that might be available. One of my all time favorites is cutting grass on a golf course. Low stress, outside, free golfing usually, and modest pay.
That would work for me but it’s seasonal here in Ohio and actually a very sought after position.
I have several friends who work part time for a funeral home. It would be a little too depressing for me but the pay is fair and the hours are short. Other friends work at the big box stores which can be rewarding financially especially if you have a background in the merchandise they sell. Still others work part time in department stores or even as greeters at Walmart.
I know a few seniors that say such work is demeaning. I happen to disagree. Any honest work done to the best of your ability is not demeaning. It should be looked at for what it is. An honest days work for an honest days pay.
There is one other area that should be considered. That is Internet Marketing. There are a lot of seniors who are making modest incomes without having to leave their homes. I know a lot of people don’t believe you can make an income using the internet. Well they are wrong. If you go that route you need to do the due diligence that you would do for any other endeavor.
Educate yourself on what methods are available, get some training then give it a try. I am doing just that. I have spent the time to find out how to make money on the internet, I have joined a fine training organization and I am starting to earn a small income. It might be small now but I am looking forward to bigger things soon.
John, Good points! Went thru to your site -- good job there. Actually, the funeral home sounds like a place where one person's attitude can make a difference. I think I'd prefer that to some of the other suggestions, myself! blessings, Cynthia
Hi Cynthia, This is one compelling reason that I wrote my article regarding jobs and to educate the American public and leaders in the government on job creation without the need to raise taxes. regards, Daniel
Thanks for the comments and visiting my site. I'm really happy that the article is generating a discussion.
Hi Joan, Job creation and reducing the budget deficit without raising taxes is the very reason that I wrote my article. Let me know what you think. Regards, Daniel
Hi John I really like the slant of this article. I think people at both ends of the age spectrum are going to start looking to the internet for self education and training. Young people too are facing massive debts when they leave college and looking for work facing competition from so many people on the job market.
Penny, Thanks for the positive comment. I agree about the young people but they sure have a leg up on us oldtimers (speaking for myself)
Hi Penny, The article I wrote is to protect the future generations. The part II which I am working on is the one that will shock you because it will impact your daily life as well as your love ones, in a very positive and productive way. Regards, Daniel
I think the "Educate Yourself" is important. Many seniors I know are worried about breaking their computers or making a mistake. I think that's one of their biggest obstacles. The other, the power of the web. I tried to explain my goals to some the other day and they looked like they thought I was out of my mind. I'm sure that some do understand the value of the internet, however.
Rebecca, I know what you mean by the look. When I tell people that I'm doing affiliate marketing I get the same look. A lot of my peers are afraid they will break their computers by using them. It's hard to make them understand that they won't hurt it by using it.
