Side Income

So you’re finding that your income runs out before the month does. This is a problem that most retirees confront sooner or later. The problem for most of us is not being able to make money on the cash reserves we have. It seems anything over 1% is considered a good return. What happened to the heady days of 8% or even 10%? I can’t explain what happened but it seems it’s not going to change any time soon.

The Federal Reserve is adamant about keeping interest rates at historical lows and says be damned to the people who have managed to put cash aside for their retirement. They seem to think everyone has a big 401K or cushy retirement package to count on. That is oh so not true for millions of us. Our government says small business’ are at the core of our employment picture and I agree. What they fail to take into account is that many of the small business’ cannot or do not provide retirement packages.

So here we are. Retired, drawing Social Security and setting on cash that is not making anything. We’re afraid to invest it in the market and afraid if we start spending it we will outlive the reserves. Not a pretty picture. This is where a side income enters the picture. Certainly not something we had anticipated when planning our retirement but now seeming to be a necessity.

Okay we need to make some extra money. What kind of work is out there that Seniors can be reasonably sure they will be considered for. If your needs are not that of a full time job there are lots of jobs. My problem with nearly all these jobs is that it puts too many restrictions on my time. It’s not the employers who are at fault here. It’s my desire to be in control of my time. After all we are supposed to be retired.

I decided I wanted to be in control of my time and my income. With that in mind I set out to find a way to make a side income. It didn’t take long to realize that not many avenues were available to meet my needs. The one that continued to surface was internet marketing. That term covers a huge area. I narrowed my search to affiliate marketing.

Once I decided on a niche, I knew I would need help. I searched out and found a training organization that had a great reputation. I joined that organization and started my journey to being self employed and in control of my time and destiny. Along the way I found a mentor who has been a tremendous help. I can’t emphasize enough how important he has been. You can do it on your own but a mentor is a tremendous help.

I know it sounds a little far fetched to some who may read this but remember this. Thousands of people are doing this and living out their retirement on their own terms.

Great point about getting a mentor. Always good to be getting some help from someone who has already done it! gai

Side income is a great title! You developed it well. Good article. You're right, choosing a narrowed topic within affiliate marketing is a good way to build a side income. By the way, I clicked through. I like your Retired and Working website that shares how being self employed and in control works for you. Good work.
