What is A Sales Funnel?

If you are new to Internet Marketing you will hear a lot of different terms and have a lot of jargon thrown your way. One of these terms is a Sales Funnel or Funnel page.

This one took me quite a while to figure out, as I was trying to visualize it as an actual page. That is the wrong way to look at it, a Sales Funnel is more like a concept, as it is made up of various elements.

The funnel analogy comes from the fact that you start off with broad, wide ranging capture techniques to get the visitor to the site and then funnel them through your site via different pages and methods, until the visitor is funnelled down and ‘distilled’ and buys something (or whatever the purpose of your funnel is).

In my mind the funnel consists of 3 main sections (though others may break it down further than I do).

Section one is the broad capture phase. Here you are using SEO techniques, adverts, YouTube, social networks, etc, that bring the user to your site.

Section two is the interest/capture phase. Your site should contain 3 things: a blog, a giveaway and links to your FB/G+ pages.

The blog is to generate interest in your site and to add value for your visitor. A giveaway is something like an ebook, video, sales report, which the user will find valuable or interesting. The links is to make sure that the user is aware of your main social networks and can join them and interact with you there.

All these 3 is to focus your user to sign up to your mailing list via a squeeze page - so the blog should link to the squeeze page, the giveaway should use an optin to get the freebie, and the social networks should have at least a part focus to get people to sign up via your squeeze page.

Section three is after a user has signed up to your email list, and involves sending them regular useful content such as a newsletter or tips about the niche. These can be sent quite often, but not too frequent to be considered spam.

The important thing here is that you can start to market your own products or affiliate products to your captured market.

It is vital that you don’t over market to them, that the amount of original valuable content you send them outweighs the offers you send them. This stops people thinking that you are merely spamming them and that you are actually trying to help them by giving them info - its all about building a relationship with the user/potential customer.
