Barcelona Airport Is This An Airport Or Shopping Center

Barcelona Airport otherwise known as El Prat (IATA code BCN) is Spain’s second largest airport. In 2011 is handled 34.4 million passengers, up 15% on 2010, over 300,000 aircraft arrived and departed carrying over 96.5 thousand tonnes of cargo according to the airport operator AENA.

The airport has two terminals. The original terminal now known as T2 and the largest of the two T1 opened in 2009. The new terminal has 101 gates split into five areas known as A, B, C, D and E. T2 has 48 gates split into three areas T2A, T2B and T2C.

The airport is close to the center of Barcelona, only 14km by taxi. You can catch coaches direct to various locations in the city or take a shuttle bus to T1 (unless you are there already) where you can catch a train. The train network connects directly with the Barcelona Metro system and covers a large part of the city. If you are heading for central Barcelona then you should probably take the coach, it is much cheaper than a taxi and because the journey is short there is not a big time difference between a bus and a taxi. You can easily catch a taxi to your final destination when you get to Plaza de Catalunya or Plaza de Espana, both coach destinations. If there are a few of you then a taxi may work out better. Typically only about 20-25 Euroes to Plaza de Catalunya (2012 prices) one way of course.

Normally with airports you don’t want to spend any time in them, just get in and out as fast as possible. But this one is a little different than most. For some reason your typical airport has a “standard” duty free shop selling the same thing as every other airport. Perfumes, Sunglasses, Spirirts, Cigarettes and local “tourist souvenirs”. Just how much perfume does someone use and how many sunglasses do we need to own? Barcelona airport has these too but it has “real” shops too.

“Fashionistas” will be very happy with an hour or so to kill at this airport especially if they still have money to spend before or after their journey. Choose from shops by Custo, SBT, Adolfo Dominguez, Carolina Herrera, Cottet and Desigual. I love the Desigual stores, vibrant and colourful. The Desigual store is not a “little boutique” but a proper store. There are more, Etam lingerie, Ferrari, La Perla, Mango, Massimo Dutti, Tascon, Tous, Tuc Tuc for your little ones and Zara. I could have said last but not least but there are more I am sure. Don’t forget to finish off your new outfit, there is Accessorize too.

For the more sporting amongst us there is Adidas and of course FCBotiga, the official store of one of the worlds’ great football teams Barcelona. If your luggage is in need of attention then there is Travel Mate. Crystal Media can solve your electronic and multimedia needs and Imaginarium will give you plenty to think about.

Cafes are plentiful, from the ubiquitous MacDonalds to Lizarran a Spanish fast food eatery. Many other cafes, bars and restaurants are available either just off from the main shopping areas or along the long walkways taking you to your gate.

The facilities are modern. There is a large private lounge area which you can pay to access. Otherwise seating is plentiful. The only negative point being the lack of power points with which to recharge laptops, smartphones, ipods etc. Sadly a problem associated with most new airports.

Barcelona airport has all the usual car rental facilities and is located next to the motorway network, so getting to and from the airport is easy. Flights depart and arrive from all over the world and combine most major “flag” carriers with most European low-cost no frills airlines.

Whatever your reason for using Barcelona airport, whether you are visiting Barcelona or connecting through to somewhere else, you will find this airport one of the better ones you will ever visit.

Nice article. I've never been to Barcelona or its airport. Hope to one day. As for shopping, they won't make a dime out of me there or anywhere for that matter. I hate shopping (unless I spot something I REALLY like which is rare). But love to sit at a cafe or bar and people watch. That's my favourite thing to do at the airport. Get the scary part out of the way of passport check, baggage check, security check then aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Just sit, relax and anticipate the trip.

I rarely shop too. Duty free no longer exists even though most european airports still persist with the myth. Most of my time is spent in cafes wishing I could find power for my dead laptop.
