Murcia San Javier Airport Servant to the Mar Menor Region Of Spain

This small airport, IATA Code MJV, is 3km outside San Javier in the district of Santiago de la Ribera, Spain. Originally constructed as a military airport in 1929 as a joint project between the Spanish Navy and Army. A role which it still serves today as a base for training Spanish Air Force pilots. Commercial flights started in 1964 originally both sharing the same single runway. However, in recent years a second runway was added to separate air-traffic. Based on the shore of the Mar Menor lagoon this the Navy used this base to train seaplane pilots but now tourists come to enjoy the delights of the region.

In 2011 the airport handled over 1.2 million passengers on over 12700 flights down from 1.6 million passengers in 2009. There has been massive property development in the local area since the late 90’s and many property investors and tourists have used the airport. There were only 88000 passengers in 1995. However, traffic is now predominantly tourism related and those who purchased property before the slowdown in the local property market.

Low cost airlines are the major users of Murcia San Javier. Ryanair, Easyjet, Air-Berlin, Jet2 are the main airlines. Iberia the Spanish “flag carrier” has a few domestic flights mainly to Madrid. Flight numbers reduce dramatically over the winter period to as low as 7 destinations a week.

Arrivals and Departures share a single floor terminal building. Two shops in Departures and a cafe serve both those arriving and departing and accompanying visitors. 18 check-in desks which are rarely all in use ensure rapid check-in of your luggage. Once checked in the departure security area is immediately to your right. The short “snake” queue here is always short and you will be unlucky if it takes more than 10 minutes to reach the security scanners.

The main Departure lounge has four duty free shops, a cafe and a Subway fast food outlet. Lots of seating is available and of course toilets. The departure gates are “doors” that lead onto the airport tarmac with booths for the airlines to use when checking your ID and boarding pass. When your gate is called, you can see all five of them. Make sure you are in the correct queue, sometimes they overlap!

Once your documents and ID are checked you are escorted outside to a “holding area”. Usually this is not a problem as the San Javier area has over three hundred days of sunshine each year. A few minutes later you are guided to the aircraft where usually you can board using both front and rear steps. There is of course assistance for those with disabilities or problems using stairs although I suggest you request this in advance. The only stairs are those getting into and out of the aircraft.

When you take off make sure you look out the window. Usually for southerly take-offs the pilot will bank to the left as you climb. This will give an amazing view of the beautiful Mar Menor lagoon and the Mediterranean coast.

The luggage area is only a few hundred metres from the area where aircraft park and the four conveyor belts ensure that you are soon reunited with your luggage after landing. It is a short walk from the aircraft to the usually unmanned passport control. The car rental desks are on both sides of the exit door from the luggage area which takes you immediately to the “meet and greet” area. The car park is across the road outside the airport terminal.

If you travel using hand luggage you can be in and out of Murcia San Javier airport in minutes. Parts of the airport have been recently refurbished and it is a very nice, clean and tidy airport. There is nothing “exciting” about it, but it just works and if you are visiting the Mar Menor, Costa Calisa, Murcia part of Spain then it is recommended. If you are lucky enough to have the use of a private jet or your own aircraft then you can use the airport too.
