The Easy Travel Guide – Have A Nice Flight
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

You’ve booked your flights, hotel and rental car and you’re ready to travel. Prior to departing, you tell your loved ones, friends, or colleagues that you’re going on a trip and they inevitably utter the words “have a nice flight”. Easier said than done. Nowadays flying unprepared is a recipe for disaster. We have all had the dreaded flight where we’re in a middle seat or our iPod or smartphone battery is dead and we can’t charge it because the seat we’re in has no power or we have nothing in our carry-on luggage to entertain us during the flight. We’re left reading the airline magazine three times while alternately staring at the back of the seat in front of us. The purpose of this article is to show you that with a little preparation you can avoid this type of frustration and experience the Easy Travel way to fly.

Before The Flight If you read my previous article, The Easy Travel Guide - How To Prepare For Your Flight, you should have already booked your seat (one that has a power port), booked any special services you may require (special meals or wheelchair), checked in online, packed everything you need for the trip, printed your boarding pass(es) and have current ID.

Hydrate Yourself Airlines keep the cabin at 5% - 12% relative humidity, which over a prolonged period can cause mild dehydration. One of several important things to do before the flight is to make sure you start drinking water several hours before you fly to thoroughly hydrate yourself. You won’t be able to carry water through the security checkpoint so as soon as you exit security buy a bottle of water and start drinking as soon as possible. During the flight if you experience headaches, muscle cramps or dizziness stay away from the sodas and drink water.

Get to the Airport Early One of the most important rules for a stress-free flight is getting to the airport early. When leaving your house or hotel or wherever have the mindset that Mr. Murphy is sitting on your shoulder. Take note of the time you’re going to the airport. Is it going to be rush hour? Is there construction on your route to the airport? Factor in enough time for any inevitability.

Check-in You’ve arrived at the airport. Now what? Go into the terminal and check out how crowded it is. If it looks okay, check in at the counter. If it looks crowded, with long lines, turn around and use the curbside check-in. You may pay a few bucks extra but you’ll bypass those long lines inside and save some time.

Security I really disapprove of people who wait until they get to the X-Ray machine, then start going through their pockets to start pulling their wallet, keys, phone, iPod, pocket-change or whatever else they choose to stuff in their pockets. Before you join the line for the security checkpoint start preparing for the security screening. Put everything except your ID and boarding pass in your carry-on luggage. Your fellow passengers will thank you for this small convenience and you will go through the security checkpoint much faster. In addition practice the following: Whenever possible wear slip-on shoes. You’re required to take off your shoes to go through the security checkpoint so make the process as easy as possible.

TSA follows the 3-1-1 rule when it comes to liquids in your carry-on. All liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less in a 1 quart zip-top bag. 1 Bag per passenger. Any liquids in a large container will cause you to be delayed while TSA personnel remove the offending container from your luggage.

Pack your coats or jackets in your checked luggage. You won’t need them on the flight and they slow you down through security. Plus they take up valuable space in the overhead compartment. I know you want to look good but the heavy chains, brooches, bracelets or other jewelry will have to be removed or you risk setting off the metal detectors so leave them in your carry-on until after you pass through security. You will have to put your laptop through the X-ray machine so make sure it is easily accessible.

Keep a cool head while going through the security checkpoint. Shouting, cursing, inappropriate jokes or threats will probably result in you being delayed or missing your flight. Or, worst case scenario, land your butt in jail. The TSA personnel have an important and demanding job so try and have some consideration. Be courteous.

Hygiene It is really easy to catch a cold, or the flu, on a flight. You’re in an airtight space along with a couple hundred other passengers for a prolonged period of time so take adequate precautions. A couple of days prior to your flight, take an Airborne immune support supplement each day to boost your immune system. They come in tablet form or on-the go packets. Next have a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your carry-on luggage. Colds and flu are transmitted primarily by contact so whenever you touch a surface (especially in the bathroom) use the hand sanitizer.

BYOE - Bring Your Own Entertainment With the exception of a few airlines you won’t get movies or a decent selection of music on your flight and the airline magazine is only interesting the first time around. So bring whatever you need to entertain yourself on the flight. Remember the ultimate goal here is Easy Travel. If you like to read bring a book or e-book reader. If you like music bring your iPod. If you need to get some work done bring your laptop. Make sure all you electronic devices are charged. If not make sure you have the appropriate airline chargers and you booked a seat with a power port. Puzzle books, Sudoku, crossword puzzles, a deck of cards. Whatever you need to entertain yourself bring it. One of my favorite items to bring with me on a flight is a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. They suppress a majority of cabin noises. I don’t travel without them.

Conclusion Preparation, and a little common sense, will produce a stress-free trip. If you follow these guidelines for Easy Travel I’m sure you will have a much more enjoyable and relaxed flight. I know I do.

Safe Travels!!
