Tips For Flying With A Baby

Flying with a baby does not have to be difficult if you are well prepared. To be honest flying with babies are easier than flying with toddlers, babies don`t run around you know where they are at the whole time and there is no ”are we there yet”...

Regardless there are some other issues you do have to deal with. You do need to bring a lot of stuff for your baby, stroller, food, bottles, formula, extra clothes... the list goes on.

I took my son on his first international flight when he was 5 months old and he did great. Having one part of the family in Europe and one part in the US we do fly regularly, all the flights, layovers and connections have thought me a few things about flying with a baby.

3 Tips For Flying With a Baby

1. Seating – Should you have a seat for your baby? This is a well discussed topic on many blogs and forums. Most airlines let you fly with your baby in your lap for a lower fee, usually 10% of the ticket price.

The reason to get a seat for your baby would be for safety reasons. If you do have a seat for your baby you can bring the car seat on board and use it for your baby. The car seat has to be FAA, Federal Aviation Association, approved and you should always check with your airline when booking if it is ok to bring the car seat onboard.

Another good reason to bring the car seat is that it is a well known environment for your baby and if she usually sleeps well in the car seat she will probably do that on the flight as well.

If you don’t have a seat for your baby you can when you book your tickets ask to be seated up front by a wall so that you can get a sleeping cod for your baby. Also at check in ask to be seated by an available seat if the plane is not full.

2. How to cope with hurting ears – some babies are bothered by ear ache at take off and landing. You don`t really know if they are bothered by it if this is your first time flying with your little one so I would try to prevent it.

What I always did was giving my baby a bottle at take off. Now you want to wait until you are actually on the run way ready to take off. I have started too early with the bottle for it to be gone before we were up in the air, glad my baby took the pacifier then.

The most important thing is to get them to suck on something, you want the same effect as when we chew on chewing gum.

3. Entertainment – a good way to entertain your little one is to bring a favorite toy or book. Don`t play the entertainment card until the baby is bored though. In the beginning there is a lot of new things going on that will probably entertain your kids for a while.

You also want to bring plenty of snacks that your baby like, that will entertain your baby not only on the airplane but also when waiting in the airport.

This was three tips for flying with a baby but there are lots more... How do your prepare for sleeping arrangements for your baby? What do you do when it is time for diaper change? What about food for your baby? Lots of questions to be answered.

Have a safe and fun flight, flying with your baby.
