Anti - domestic Violence Group Wants to See Immigrant Protection Laws Dropped

An anti-domestic violence group is asking the House GOP to eliminate or greatly modify some protections for immigrants, particularly women who are covered in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) as it is currently written. But, one of the top officials who are asking that these protections be changed may have ulterior motives for the request.

The advocacy group that is asking for these changes, Stop Abusive And Violent Environments or SAVE, has been lobbying the House of Representatives hoping to make these changes under VAWA to allegedly curb fraudulent claims by illegal immigrants who are only trying to stay in the country. The GOP version of the VAWA renewal bill will eliminate protections such as confidentiality for immigrant victims of assault and will force them to tell their abusers that they are applying for a protected status. This version will also drop the provision that allows these women to apply for permanent citizenship on their own.

But, one of the top officials of SAVE, Natasha Spivack is one of the founders and financial backers of Encounters International which was formed to bring Russian brides to US men since 1993. Spivack, the treasurer of SAVE is a vocal proponent for the House version of the VAWA renewal bill claiming that she is only wanting to reduce fraud.

One of the Russian brides that was matched to her husband by Encounters International is suing the firm claiming in part that she has been abused by her husband and that he was not properly screened before she was matched to him. That woman also claims that the agency did not tell her about VAWA which would have allowed her to escape the abuse as required by law. Currently, there is a protection in place that allows immigrant women to escape these types of situations without being automatically deported.

Spivack claimed that the woman's claims were fraudulent but a jury found in her favor, awarding her a sum of $434,000 in damages. Encounters International appealed the decision but lost that case as well.

If these changes are made, it may severely weaken the current protections against violence and may leave gaps in coverage for more than just immigrant women. Experts worry that dropping the confidentiality clause will increase the risk of fatalities among immigrants who try to escape from abusive situations. Those women are already at a higher risk of being killed than other groups according to statistics.

Hello Aimee, just to let you know I was a clerk for a judge for over 7 years. We did domestic violence cases all the time. We never checked the status of these women whether they were illegal or not. I have to say about 85% of the cases were Hispanic men being the violators. I would pass by them and watch these men kiss up and pour the "love" on these women before they entered the courtroom. The woman would 8 times out of ten say she wanted to drop the charges. Big suprise, they could not, it is considered the police office'rs case and there would be no dropping it. That is the law in VA. I am going to say this and if people get mad that's their choice. I am not prejudice at all my husband is Hispanic. The crimes especially sex crimes, and domestic assault against even 5 and 6 year old girls were committed by illegal aliens in more than half of the cases. Thousands and thousands, the state pays for their lawyers and interperters. We even had many deported and give it 6 months they were back doing the same thing. No respect for the law and no feelings for the children or women they had assaulted. I was in the courtroom just about everyday and sat with 7 different judges and I know what I saw. My point is if the states all adopted this law it would probably help with this problem. When a woman is hurt in this state from what I saw the judges are not interested in the woman's status, however these men who came here illegally in the first place need to be slammed with jail, high fines and deportation. Our President has deported more illegal aliens than any other president 85% had criminal records or committed crimes while in the U.S. I will be voting for him this year, he has been the only one I have seen who has the guts to do it. I did like your article and I know you have the women's safety in mind. Regards, April

The problem is that the bill would only hurt the women involved- they would have to tell their husband what they are doing instead of being allowed to go to a women's shelter or apply for citizenship. The only reason that this woman wants this added to the bill is to protect her business. She makes a living bringing young Russian and Asian women to the US to marry men who obviously cannot or will not find themselves a bride from her. They want subservient, obedient women and will do whatever it takes to get them- even if that means buying a mail order bride. She is hiding behind the name "SAVE" so that people think she is doing good work for women when she is only trying to keep her pockets as full as her heart is empty.

That's awful Aimie, I would call that "human traffiking". This is a sick human being who thinks of these women as nothing more than animal stock. Thanks for being this up because I have never heard about this and I am sure I am not alone. From what I have seen the black eyes and swollen jaws and hollow eyes this abuse is real and never ending. Good article I checked the "like" button and hope many others do as well. Regards, April
