Herman Cain and his supporters have called allegations that he sexually harrassed women during his term as president of the Restaurant Association nothing but a high tech lynching, one that is racially motivated. He has also called all of the media attention the case is getting, nothing but a baseless media onslaught. So far, three women had come forward with allegations that he had made inappropriate remarks or suggestions to them while they were employed by the Association but none have come forward publicly. Now another woman, represented by Gloria Allred, has done just that.
Sharon Bialek had worked with the Restaurant Group Education Foundation from late December 1996 to late June of the following year but had been laid off before her incident with Cain occurred. She had met him while she was still employed by the foundation and called him after losing her job for help in finding a new one. After contacting Cain, Bialek says that she traveled to Washington to meet up with him, finding that she had been booked into a luxury suite once she arrived. After dinner, Cain reportedly asked her if she had ever been to the Association offices located in the Capital. While en route to those offices, Cain put his hand on her leg, toward her genitals as well as pushing her head toward his own crotch area.
Bialek did not answer any questions from the reporters but she did tell two other people about what had happened. Unlike the other women, she was not employed by Cain at the time of the incident and was not offered a settlement of any kind. Allred said that Bialek was coming forward to show her support to the other women as well as to all harassed women everywhere.
Cain contends that since there are no names or other concrete information being released, it should prove to the general public that the claims are baseless and should be ignored. The candidate scolded reporters after a debate with Newt Gingrich on Saturday in Texas. Cain is still alleging that Governor Rick Perry is the one behind the story's leak.
Public opinion of Cain in general has not declined and donations are starting to pour in. Experts had warned that Cain's campaign was lackluster at best with very little actual money being collected before the sexual harassment claims surfaced. Straw polls have had Cain at or near the top of the field for many weeks now.
