Michele Bachmanns Staff: Massive Shakeoff Could Spell Trouble for Her Campaign

Michele Bachman's presidential campaign has had yet another major shakeup in the last week after the entire New Hampshire office walked out, citing problems with the national campaign office. The five members of that office officially resigned late last week but the report was denied by Bachman's national campaign manager, Keith Nahigian. Nahigian told reporters " We have a great team in New Hampshire and we have not been informed that anyone is leaving the campaign."

It was likely that statement to the press that prompted today's scathing open letter which confirmed that the New Hampshire campaign staff had in fact quit the Bachmann campaign and pointed fingers directly at the behavior of the national campaign staff saying in part that they were tired of being treated like second class citizens as well as being purposely left out of the loop. The open letter went on to say that the national office was not responsive to the local campaign office and called them rude and unprofessional among other things.

In September, the national campaign office called the New Hampshire office to ask that the staffers there "go off payroll" briefly but did not explain why or gie a time frame for how long the change would be in effect. The employment status for those employees was never clarified despite repeated requests for an answer.

The letter explained that these frustrations had been building in the New Hampshire office since June but came to a head when the Congresswoman visited the area in the early weeks of October. Exact reasons were not given, nor did the letter say anything about Bachmann personally. It concluded by explaining that the staff were still behind Bachmann's campaign efforts but that they did not agree with the direction that the national campaign was going.

Bachmann's campaign has been fraught with staff turnover almost from the start. Her former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, who had once worked with Reagan stepped down in September citing his health issues and age. At the time, Rollins had said that he would remain in the campaign as a senior advisor but it was later learned that he left because he and Bachmann were bumping head over strategy for her campaign. In addition to Rollins, his deputy and another upper level strategist left the campaign at the same time. Keith Nahigian stepped into the position of campaign manager at the national level after Rollins departed. Bachmann's congressional office has also seen some shakeup in recent months as well, with her Congressional spokesperson leaving his post in recent months as well.

Critics have been quick to point out that the mass resignations are possibly linked to Bachmann's dwindling popularity and falling polling numbers.
