We must spend more for the defense for the preservation of our beloved country. Our lives depend on the United States being the super military power that we have become accustomed to having. We have been the beneficiaries of a safe place to live. Many citizens have taken the military protection for granted.
I would like to start with some basic facts. No great nation was cut down from being a great nation because it had an excessive national debt. No great nation has ceased to be a great nation because its taxes were too high. These are important issues, indeed, but they are not fatal to our survival.
Military weakness is a much worse danger to our country's future. History has shown that countries do fail, and their citizens suffer horrible consequences if they are not able to defend themselves. These other problems are important, but they are secondary to our national defense.
We are not spending enough to defend the United States and the free world. Many people worry about the deficit that has grown from $4 trillion to $17 trillion since 2001, and they are right to be concerned. These people have put in place a plan to reduce spending, and try to keep taxes low. In negotiations with President Obama they hammered out a compromise that became known as "the sequester."
The sequester automatically cuts federal spending every six months or other intervals. This law stipulates that equal cuts be taken out of military spending and federal domestic spending. However, the domestic spending, on aggregate, is four (4) times the military spending. This means the military is hit in a hugely disproportionate way.
To Illustrate, Department A in a small company spends $1,000 per month, while Department B spends $4,000. The management asks that both cut their spending by $200. This means a 20% cut for A, and only 5% for B. This is where our Department of Defense is. They are taking a hit that has four (4) times the impact of a domestic entity.
The results are drastic. Here are a few:
- Planes cannot fly.
- Ships are left in port.
- Housing allowances are being cut for our military families, those who give their lives for our country.
- New military technology is are being delayed.
- Three of the Joint Chiefs of Staff believe we may not decisively win a war.
- There is no one to pick up the slack. No Royal Navy, no strong French army.
Our greatest duty is to defend our nation. That means our way of life too. Let's stop or change the sequester, and defend the nation.
