The Presidential debates have arrived. What will be the main issues tonight as the two candidates square off for the first Presidential debate of 2012? Will they focus on the economy or unemployment? What about healthcare plans and social security? I know I would like to hear what each candidate will do about our southern border. Illegal immigration is on the minds of many voters this election year.
The idea of having secure borders has many people hopeful, but which candidate provides the best plan for border security? President Obama has had 4 years to do something about it, and very little has been addressed by his administration. If elected, what will the next 4 years bring? That is what frightens many people this Halloween season.
Mitt Romney has a plan to build a high-tech fence to help protect the porous southern border of the United States. The border would need to be secured before any other actions are taken. It would not make sense to deport illegal immigrants, just to have them turn right around and re-enter using the same illegal pathway.
There is not near enough border patrol agents to effectively protect our borders. With the addition of a high-tech fence, the current border patrol numbers might be sufficient. It would be hard to imagine how many border agents would be needed without the aid of a barrier.
Recently, I visited with a waitress at a local restaurant about the problems of illegal immigration. She indicated there were many illegals living here in New Mexico, including her boyfriend. She had an idea about how to make a statement at the upcoming Halloween party.
She wants to dress as a border patrol agent and have her boyfriend be the illegal immigrant that she had rounded-up. The idea put my brain into high gear. I knew the idea was funny and sad at the same time.
I suggested she use handcuffs so as not to lose her prisoner for the night. She already had plans as to what she would wear. A green border patrol outfit complete with sunglasses and black shiny boots.
Of course the boyfriend would have to wear some grungy looking attire that spoke to the long arduous journey from Mexico into the United States. Some strategically placed water down the back would add a humorous touch.
The fact that a local Mexican couple will be dressing the part of illegal immigration this Halloween season has sparked some fun times in the midst of this year's political warfare.
Just a few scary and fun thoughts from this ole cowboy.
I would like to see the borders more secure just because, not only is the journey arduous, immigrants risk life and limb to cross over. I'm sure it's a very frightening and overwhelming experience...I couldn't imagine doing something like that. There are so many immigrants who want to enter this country legally but it costs thousands of dollars to do so and the waiting list is extremely long. So, they choose between risking their lives so they can support their families instead. I don't support illegal immigration, but I can't say I blame them for wanting to do their best for themselves and their families. Great article with lots to chew on!
Good title - and well done article. Indeed, right now, 'tis likely that the voting for President and others who are seeking to serve will be a matter of What Scares You The Most on election day. Sad but true...
That's a great point! Who would have thought that politics comes down to what you would be most afraid of. Thanks for sharing, Cynthia
I'll be the cynic here and say that these debates are too limited in scope to even begin to take seriously. Where's the discussion on Libya? Is yesterday's hot topic already the day before's hot topic? How about Occupy Wall St., and all the first amendment sabotages we made against them just for camping in public? The excessive military spending? Trillion dollars in student loan debt? I'll stop there. I dunno bout you guys, but my TV's off. If they're talking about it, then they're probably not planning to actually fix it -- that goes double for health care reform.
They did none of that! And I'm sure they won't get anywhere near any issue that means something to the majority of the citizen's here.
The debates are nothing more than a performance. How could anyone possibly cover all of that in just three debates? They wouldn't be candid or dig in too deeply because it would cost them the election. So they say what they think the majority wants to hear. That's politics. Sorry to say, I share some of your cynicism in that I trust all of them as far as I can throw them. And yes, they are up for sale to the highest bidder, from the top down.
McK, I hope they talk about border control in the next 2 debates. Obama has totally avoided the matter, as far as I can see. Our country has become Swiss cheese. Am sure New Mexico is full of illegal immigrants. They're coming to America to make money, and I wonder how much longer we will be so attractive at the rate our prosperity is being eroded.
The prosperity comes solely from the fact that we are the world's backup currency. Almost everything on sale is in dollars, so countries have to purchase from us just to get on the world stage. We've been playing unfairly all along, and border patrol isn't going to fix that. Root of the problem -- target solution.
I sure hope so! I have been waiting for that very issue to come up, but I wonder if they are going to skirt around it somehow. Here's hoping they actually hit it head on.
I want to know what happened to Ron Paul, and why American elections always end up with a choice between two really bad options...
It's called the two party system, my friend. It's a broke system which never allows a true majority president being elected.
Actually, it's called the free market, where everything, even our politicians, are up for sale. What did we expect?
