What is Hay Fever? – Its Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Hay fever is often also referred to as allergic rhinitis. It is the result of an over-reactive immune system when the affected person comes in the contact of pollen grains, dust mites, animal dander etc. It is probably one of the most common allergic reactions that people generally suffer from. It becomes more common during certain seasons such as spring when the flowers bloom and leave pollen grains in the environment. When these pollen grains are inhaled by people who are allergic to them, their bodies’ immune system considers them to be harmful and releases a type of antibody called IgE to fight with them. Subsequently, IgE attaches to these pollen grains and the reaction of two causes the different symptoms of hay fever.

The typical symptoms of hay fever vary from person to person and they can be anything from just a mild discomfort to sometimes even severe ones. Notwithstanding its name, its symptoms rarely include a fever. The typical symptoms include runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, nasal congestion, headache, sneezing, coughing, hoarseness and difficulty in breathing etc. Depending upon the allergens, the actual symptoms may include all or some of the above mentioned symptoms and their outbreak may happen during anytime of the day. Sometimes its symptoms look very similar to a common cold except that the common cold gets better faster in comparison.

Actually, hay fever or allergic rhinitis can be of two types: seasonal or perennial. The seasonal one is, of course, caused by the pollen grains released in the environment by plants and trees. Depending upon the season in which it affects people, it is also known as rose fever. However, the perennial symptoms of allergic rhinitis arise from indoor allergens such as house dust, dust mites, molds etc. If proper treatment for it is not provided to the affected person, it may hamper his quality of life. It may result in a situation where the patient may not be able to get even adequate sleep because of the symptoms associated with the problem. Cases have come up where, because of lack of timely treatment, the symptoms have become complicated resulting in sinusitis, infection in the ears and asthma etc.

If you happen to suffer from similar symptoms but are not sure of what is causing it, you must visit your family doctor. First of all he may prescribe you some tests to find out the source of allergy because knowing the source is very important for taking the right course of treatment and precautions. In fact, if you believe that you are suffering from an allergy, you must also try to observe the pattern of the symptoms and try to find out what may be causing it. Once you know the allergen that is causing the problems for you, the medical practitioner may prescribe you some drugs and precautions that you must take to avoid the allergens. The common drugs that are prescribed for the treatment of allergic rhinitis are anti-histamines, decongestants, nasal irrigation drops etc.

The best way to treat hay fever or any allergy for that matter is to be informed and avoid the allergens that are causing it. To avoid the pollen grains in the environment, you may consider going out during the time of the days when the pollen count is the lowest, using air filters, keeping the house and car windows closed etc. Besides, there are many natural remedies such as local raw honey, pycnogenol, butterbur, mangosteen etc. that may also be used under the consultation of your physician to treat your allergies.
