Are Apricot Seeds An Alternative Natural Cancer Treatment?

My name is Steve and I don’t have cancer. But my girlfriend Colleen is a cancer survivor who chose the alternative cancer treatment path over that over the conventional practices of our medical doctors. We believe she is alive today because she made that choice several years ago. Together, we’ve been researching and learning about alternative cancer treatments so that she could make more informed decisions about her situation and so that I could develop my own personal cancer prevention model. We’ve learned some interesting things. One of the earliest things we embraced was the use of apricot seeds.

Apricot seeds are the kernel, about the size of a small almond, that come from inside the apricot pit. They’re not readily available in any grocery or health food stores for various reasons. However, they are available online if you do a search. Apricot seeds are touted in much literature and many information sites as an alternative cancer treatment. They are also promoted by the conventional western medical profession, government regulatory agencies, and large pharmaceutical companies as ineffective against cancer, and even poisonous. When you think of what the implications of an inexpensive natural, food source that can’t be patented might be to the financial interests of these groups, then you can readily accept why apricot seeds are being denounced. Nonetheless, there are many who believe in them. Here’s what we’ve discovered in our research that might help explain how they play a role in cancer treatment and prevention.

Apricot seeds and their derivatives have some different names. They can be refered to as laetrile, vitamin B-17, or amygdalin. For consistency sake, we’ll stick with the term amygdalin in this article. The general position promoted by the conventional western medical profession and large pharmaceutical companies is that apricot seeds are poisonous. This is accurate to some degree in that apricot seeds contain benzaldyhide and organic cyanide, which are known poisons. But there are several other foods such as almonds, lima beans, soy, spinach and bamboo shoots among others that also contain a safe form of these poisons. Most foods containing organic cyanide do not harm the body because the cyanide remains contained as part of another molecule.

Our normal, healthy cells contain an enzyme called rhodanese that is not found in cancer cells. This enzyme adheres to any free cyanide molecules in the body and converts them to sulfer, which does no harm to the body and is easily passed. There is another enzyme called beta-glucosidase that is found only in cancer cells. Scientists believe that this enzyme releases the organic cyanide and benzaldyhide in the apricot seeds to work with the healthy enzymes to kill off the cancer cells. They do not appear to harm the healthy, non-cancerous cells.

Colleen and I both use the apricot seeds. They have a bit of a bitter flavour, which I don’t mind so I can eat them whole. As a cancer prevention method, I eat 5 or 6 every morning with a glass of juice. Colleen chooses to eat the equivalent of about 12 to 15 seeds daily, in a ground up form that she mixes in with a fruit smoothie or some organic yogurt. She notices a difference when she is not taking apricot seeds. I, on the other hand, carry on with some informed faith that these things work as an alternative cancer treatment and prevention method.
