Breakfast, The Best Meal Of The Day

I am going to continue on with my research of the various diets available to the public today. In one of my first articles I wrote that we do not prepare meals anymore like grandma used to. She served us meals from all the food groups at every meal. She paid attention to what she was serving and how she prepared it. I can hear my mother and grandma saying, "now eat your breakfast, it is going to be your best meal of the day". Breakfast is still my favorite meal of the day, especially when I am traveling. I just so much enjoy eggs, bacon, whole wheat toast, a fruit and coffee. When I am at home I never eat like this. It may have whole wheat toast and coffee and a fruit. Ok, but not great.

Grandma used to serve breakfast about 8:00 am, her large meal about noon and then at 5:00 pm she would have a small meal such as soup and sandwiches or a salad. She was very prompt with meal times and the family was used to the way that she did things. Did it fit into our schedules? No, not all the time, but, when she had a meal on the table we had better have tried our darndest to be there. She was also understanding of our schedules and would go out of her way to make sure we ate first, before going anywhere. In her thinking she wanted everyone to gather around the table for meals, however, given a choice, if someone could not be there then it was more important to eat correctly before going on our way.

She did not believe that your stomach needed a lot of food at night. I do think that her ideas were on the right track. Most of eat a large meal at night and suffer later with reflux or acid at night. Eat lighter at night and see if this helps. Also, watch what you eat. Decrease acid foods and do not eat any fried foods. Any foods that cause you acid problems should be avoided anyway. I have also heard many people say, including me, that you should not fill your stomachs with food after 6:00 pm because of these problems.

The next diet that I have researched is, The Big Breakfast Diet. This diet says that your best meal of the day is breakfast. Breakfast is eaten before 9 am and it fires you up with the energy that your body needs to cope the rest of the day. Yea! You go grandma.

WAIT JUST A MINUTE! It also says as long as you eat a good share of protein you may add pizza, donuts, and ice cream at breakfast? Grandma never allowed that one. This diet's focus is the combination of foods you eat, that they claim helps you succeed in weight loss goals. So, as long as you eat the protein you can have all the no no's.

What the experts say is that it makes no difference what time you eat or if you eat a big breakfast containing half your days calories, there is no research to date. They do agree that a good breakfast, preferably before 10:00 am has shown that people have greater control over their days calories. They also say that studies show that people who start the day off with a sensible breakfast tend to have lower weights.

Have you read my article on time and nutrition? Unless one was to get up very early and prepare a good balanced breakfast to start their day, many might find this to be a challenge to do . Like I said before, we all have 24 hours, it is what we do with that 24 hours that count the most. If we feel that a good well-balanced breakfast is important to us and our families then we will find the time to do it. Why should all this burden be on mom's. Get the family involved in helping and seeing the importance of this life style change. Everyone will feel, think and function better during the day.

It has been known for some time that fiber, and water is healthy and gives one a full feeling. If you were to concentrate on the lean proteins, such as turkey bacon, fresh fruit, fiber such as whole wheat toast with a very small amount of butter, for fat (important), and egg whites, it would fill you up, give you the energy you need to continue your day and you would not be adding extra weight from this breakfast. It makes no sense to me to add donuts, pizza or ice cream if we so chose as this diet says you can do.

Does this diet offer you a LIFE CHANGE? Meaning, is this the type of diet that one could or would want to stay on for the rest of their life? In my opinion I would have to say no it doesn't. I do agree with this diet that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
