Feeling Tired? 4 Natural Ways to Increase Your Energy Levels

Do you wake up feeling like you're going to knock out the day? Can you make it through the afternoon supercharged up and not feel pooped by the evenings? If no, then why not? Sometimes I believe we mask our fatigue and tiredness with cups of coffee, energy drinks, and chemical pills that supposedly “work”. So I decided to write this article to provide some natural remedies for beating the no energy blues. Everyone is different so you need to figure out what works best for you to help you boost through the day with confidence and feelin' like a million gazillion bucks.

Reduce your stress levels

There are many benefits to your health when you reduce the stress in your life, some you may not have realized. Reducing your stress level can lead to decreased blood pressure, increase immune function, and less work for the adrenal glands, which become activated when we are in our fight or flight mode. Stress can cause your energy to drain pretty quickly, leaving you tired from tight muscles, over firing neurons, and overactive mental activities. Some changes you may notice immediately, and some may take a month or two to get down. Don't get “stressed out” if you can't stop stressing out. Just focus on your breathing and find your way of dealing with day to day hassles. If you haven't learned a proper way of meditation, I suggest you find a way by taking a class and looking at a few good videos.

Nutrition and your energy

Nutrition always plays a role in our health, and it's important to look at the areas where we can improve. Are you eating too much or too little? Are you eating healthy foods or fatty, make-you-more-sleepy foods? Well typically the answer is always going to be “ehhh kinda, a little, you know”. I understand that we all are not perfect, but there are small things we all can do. I recommend to all my patients to drink room temperature water, which helps with keeping our qi flowing smoothing smoothly as well as helping our digestive system. Eating green and other multicolored vegetables everyday, avoiding greasy foods, and eating warm meals can all have a positive effect on your metabolism and energy levels.

Keep it moving

We all hear about the benefits of exercise, and you won't see me stop writing about them! If your don't feel like working out, it always helps to get your feet and arms moving first. Just begin with small steps and round arm circles, then walk around the block. This is also great to encourage employees to do on a regular basis, as it promotes cardiovascular circulation, relaxation, and helps to awaken the body. Keep some really light dumb bells around the house, at your work desk, or any other personal space and just move them around to see if you don't feel better in two minutes. If your stuck in a meeting or in class, try moving just your big toe and see if you feel more energetic after twenty or thirty seconds. These have all personally helped me out and can motivate you to enjoy your daily exercise.

Sleep well on a regular basis

We all know how important sleep is, but it's usually the first thing sacrificed when we have limited time and big projects with speeding deadlines. However, it's important to make sure our body is well rested and able to handle whatever comes our way in a given day. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it is important to get to bed before 11 pm. This helps with keeping your body in it's natural rhythm with the earth and the universe. In bio-med the pineal gland is considered a major link between the mind and body, and is responsible for inducing sleep. You don't have to do anything, the gland already knows when you're tired and when you should rest. For women, typically most will enter menarche around the age of 13, and then every month there is a cycle. Do women have to do anything for this to happen? I hope not! It happens automatically, and it's part of the natural flow of life. In TCM we are trying to help your body achieve balance and help your qi (pronounced chee”) flow freely and correctly. So, if you get your sleeping habits balanced and consistent, it will help get the other systems in balance as well.

It starts with you

If you want more energy it's going to have to begin with your attitude and commitment towards better health. There are a few conditions which can cause tiredness and fatigue such as hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, mononucleosis (Mono), or diabetes, so it's best to see your primary healthcare provider if you think you're experiencing extreme fatigue beyond normal or fatigue with any other types of symptoms. Your life and sense of empowerment could change in an instant. Are you willing to start the process to make the change?
