I was reading an article today from the "Peoples Pharmacy" on the overuse of anti inflammatory pain relievers and the article really hit home as they were describing me to the letter. I have been popping these things like candy due to chronic arthritis pain and did not realize how bad this is. I began to panic a bit after reading the article thinking that sure, now they are saying that the only kind of over the counter pain relief I have found that works for me is killing me. Since I do own a website for Home Remedies, I thought what better time to come up with some home remedies for pain.
What is wrong with pain pills?
First lets explore what I mean by "pain pills". I am talking about your over the counter NSAIDs, or Nonsteroidal antiinflamitory drugs. You know them by the names of Ibuprofen, Alive and the likes. Tylenol also falls into this category. Now, if you are taking these once in a while for a headache or back ache or such that is fine, but if you are like me with chronic pain it becomes very easy to start abusing these, as they do work well. The general public has now made these the most overused over the counter medications and the side effects of doing this is very dangerous.
What makes them dangerous?
One of the side effects of overuse is elevated blood pressure, and for someone who already is dealing with high blood pressure it actually negates their medications. This can cause real problems in trying to control blood pressure as it goes up and down like a yo yo. Another side effect is liver damage. too much of this drug effects the function of the liver and can lead to serious problems with prolonged use. New studies now just released are claiming that overuse of these kinds of drugs can also lead to heart attacks and strokes. Some other side effects include kidney failure and bleeding ulcers. people with asthma are more likely to experience allergic reactions. Not a pretty picture we paint.
What can I take for pain?
After doing a bit of searching I found there are many alternatives to using these to relieve the pain of inflammation. from something as simple as a warm bath or shower to supplements that really do work. I have learned today that serious attention needs to be taken to come up with ways of managing my pain.
Please feel free to share this and leave any questions and comments below.
I like that there are alternatives to alleviate inflammation other than constantly taking medications. I have found numerous essential oils that aid in reducing inflammation, it is nice that there are options for those of us that don't want to be taking pain meds every day.
Taking pain pill every time you feel pain is not a good idea to do.... it will only cause you more problem like what Rob said better do it in a natural way. Thanks, Shawn!
I hate to take pills and only do when desperation strikes like a Migraine, other wise the body must use its natural manner to over come...
Wow, that's an amazing picture you've used Shawn. It can be so easy for people to start to rely on over the counter products, I really like the niche you've chosen on home remedies.
Heat Therapy Shawn. Thermophore is supposed to be good.
Good article Shawn I too suffer from chronic shoulder pain( rotator cuff) and been on and off of tyleno #3 and Ib brofen and jsut plain asprin for years now...I find they work for a while then my body gets used to them, then not so much...I have been worried about the amount of these pills also....think I will slow down and look for a better alternative....
